Installing the Yamaha OPL-SAx Sound Card

[ Back to the Linux Stuff - Email Me ]

Installing this sound card is probably one of the least difficult things I have done since I got linux installed. I'm not even sure why I put this up here. :)

I don't have a CD Player anywhere in the house except on the computers. Since I don't much feel like wearing on my laptop CDRom, I needed to have my home systems sound system working. And so started my adventure in getting the sound card working.

First things first, don't jump the gun and assume that linux doesn't like your equipment. It just may not be the case, and I learned that with this adventure.

This was easy after finding out what to run, and the key is /usr/sbin/sndconfig. After executing this program, the sound card came pretty easily. Linux determined my card and set it up. I did however start getting some error message concerning "insmod not found". I simply looked for "insmod" using locate (at the command prompt: locate insmod) and located it in the /sbin directory. I changed to the /sbin directory and executed /usr/sbin/sndconfig and everything worked out great. This is probably a good indication for me to learn about paths in linux :).
