Installing StarOffice 5.1a for Linux

[ Back to the Linux Stuff - Email Me ]

Man, was this a task, let me tell you. I knew I wanted an office package, and I figured I wanted Staroffice, but I never thought it would take this long. With all the problems I had trying to get the files from sun.com, I never thought I would have this installed. Installation after getting the files was pretty easy though.

First, I got the .tar files from www.sun.com/staroffice. I tried to get the one 70+ MB file, but I ended up messing up when lynx asked me if I wanted to save the file. I then managed to get the 7 smaller files over the next week (downloading about one a day). Finally, I had the 7 files, and was ready to install this weekend.

I downloaded the files to /apps/so, then I opened each one using "tar -xvf FILENAME" at the prompt in the /apps/so directory. Untarring these files made a directory called /apps/so/so51inst/office51. Switch to this directory (cd /apps/so/so51inst/office51) and run the setup program (./setup -net). I did this as the root user, and installed the typical (normal, whatever) installation. When the install finished, I went back to run the program by going to /apps/Office51/bin and running soffice (soffice at the command prompt).

This caused Staroffice to start another install (put the necessary files for the user root in the root's home directory), I just checked the normal install (1.7MB) and proceeded from there. When that finished, I was able to go to the /apps/Office51/bin directory and run soffice and start the program. 10 minutes into it and I was editing this site page.

Next, I logged off and logged back on as my normal account, mmccue. I went back to the /apps/Office51/bin directory and ran soffice again. This setup the Staroffice applications for my main account, mmccue. Once that was done, I was able to run Staroffice as mmccue as well as root user.
