Data Encryption Standard (DES)

The Data Encryption Standard has been a worldwide standard of encryption for 20 years. It has stood up remarkably well against years of cryptanalysis, but skepticism has come up about how long it will hold until it is cracked.

It was adopted as a federal standard on November 23, 1976, and authorized for use on all unclassified government communications.

DES is a block cipher, it encrypts data in 64 bit blocks. A 64 bit block of plaintext goes in one end of the algorithmn and a 64 bit block of siphertext comes out the other. It is also a symmetric algorithm. The same key is used to encrypt and decrypt. The key length is 56 bits. The security of the algorithm relies on the key.

RSA

RSA is a public-key cryptosystem developed by MIT professors: Ronald L. Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard M. Adleman in 1977 in an effort to help ensure internet security.
