A SHORT HISTORY AND PROGRESSION

For the past seven years, Winterset has been playing intensely personal, emotionally driven rock music. They were originally formed in Biloxi, MS in August of 1996 by an intense friendship of four people. All these people had past experience with touring, shows, and band life in general, but now had a more solid idea of where they wanted to be musically. By August of 1997, Winterset had released a demo tape and hit the road for a small east coast tour. Knowing the importance of staying fresh in peoples' minds and just loving the experience of it anyway, they toured again in November. Throughout the winter and spring, they practiced incessantly, played local shows, and began writing a lot of new material, which proved that their sound was evolving.

In May of 1998, they decided it was time for another east coast tour, which led to the Nine Fest in Baltimore, MD. By November, Winterset was in the studio recording their self-titled, self-produced, first album and by March of 1999, it was self-pressed and ready for the market. It was once again, time for tour, this time to support an album. In July, the band headed up the east coast for the fourth time, but didn't stop there. They drove north all the way into Canada and over to the Midwest to expand their audience.

For the next year, Winterset toured a little more, but mainly spent a lot of time with family and friends, giving them the time they needed as a band to yet continue to evolve. Two tours followed, one in May of 2000 with Virginia rock band, Swank, and another in October. Now it was time for the studio again with material that was written for an almost devastating two years. In February of 2001, their best 10 songs since the release of their first album were compiled to form their second full length album entitled “To Travel Miles Only To End...".  Finally released on September 29, 2001, by Anvil Records USA, this album was soon on most college airwaves, in most independent record stores, and is being promoted and distributed by three companies; Anvil Records USA, Po Boy Productions, and The Awareness Program.  Two small tours followed the release of this album and in July 2002, the band set out on a different kind of journey; to record a series of live promotional videos for Live Unsigned, an L.A. based A&R Company.  They have been shopping the band ever since and with good interest from quite a few labels as a result.

Winterset has been together seven years and in that time, have been fortunate enough to play with bands like Swank, Four Hundred Years, Milemarker, Engine Down, Braid, Hot Water Music, Vehicle Birth, Sleepy Time Trio, Frodus, Rainer Maria, Rye Coalition, Grade, and many more. They have been compared to a few of their personal influences and favorites that range from Sunny Day Real Estate and Fugazi to Mogwai and Neurosis. They have stood the test of time because they share a desire for the direction and evolution of their music, but are not afraid to bring new sounds or ideas to the table, which they encircle as friends.

AN END TO THIS HAS BEEN DECIDED.  WINTERSET WILL PERFORM A FINAL SHOW IN SEPTEMBER 2003.  PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR DETAILS.
