Broken Hearts and Shattered Dreams

In September of 1981, we returned from the summer tour. As usual, we had played to packed houses every night and got fabulous reviews; but, as usual, no recording deal was forthcoming.  I began my sophomore year at Columbia and moved into my first apartment.   Jon moved back onto a cot in the storage room at the recording studio and his $50 per week salary as “gopher.”

My apartment was on Mulberry Street, above Mario’s, a long established restaurant.  My grandfather made the arrangements.   The owner of Mario’s was an old friend of his.  One of Nano’s cousins owned the produce market across the street.  The home Nano grew up in was around the corner.  The neighborhood was familiar to me and I already felt at home.

One of the first things I did, was make a spare key to give Jon.  I figured he’d appreciate being able to shower and have a hot meal once in awhile; without having to drive an hour to his parents’.  So, the first three times Carmine called, he talked to Jon instead of me.
