I began to laugh. “See what you miss when
you’re on the road so long? No, Jon and I never did get engaged.”
“But, you were together so long…you were so sure…what
happened?”
“Diana.”
“And you’re ok with that? Well, obviously
you are…you and Jon seem as close as ever.”
“Of course. We grew up together. We both realized
one day, that as much as we loved each other, we just weren’t meant to
marry. Maybe it’s because we were so close growing up. Being raised
like a brother and sister practically. I don’t know. And it
was obvious from the first that Diana was special.”
“How did they meet?”
“She went to school with us. In fact, I set them
up.”
“Wow…and to think, all night….” Carmine looked at me intently.
“We need to talk.”
“Don’t you want that sandwich?” I asked. I was pretty
sure what was coming next. After all, hadn’t I always known it?
But still, it was scary.
“Forget the sandwich. I’m not hungry any longer.”
