| Carmine pushed his way through the crowd. About
half-way across he met up with Diana, who was trying to make her way our
direction. He gave her a hug. As they embraced, she whispered
something in his ear. I saw Carmine visibly stiffen. Whatever
Diana said, clearly shook him up. I could see it from this distance.
When Diana arrived she gave me a big hug.
"What's going on?" I asked, as we sat down, but I feared the worst. Carmine's mother had been having medical problems for some time. Nobody seemed to know what was wrong with her. I was sure that something had happened to his mother. What else could it be? As Carmine greeted Tony and Jon, I watched their faces. They were grave and stricken with shock. As they began to talk I could see Carmine grow pale. He was becoming more and more distressed by the minute. His mother must have died. This was more serious than I thought. "What's going on?" I asked Diana again. She could only shake her head and say, "I can't tell you." |
