If you need an additional Email address there are plenty of places that will give you one for free. You normally access your free Email account by going to a Web address and entering a username and password. Each message then appears as a web page. People only used to using "normal" Email may find using these services a bit fiddly to use, but on the plus side your Email can be accessed from any computer, so you do not need to have your own computer to use these services, and they can also be useful when travelling. Some also let you forward all mail sent to your free address to any other Email address.
Since there are so many places that offer this service, I have just put direct links on this page to some of the better known providers, plus some links to other sites which link to many others.
| BIGFOOT  | HOTMAIL  | MY OWN EMAIL  | ROCKETMAIL |
If you're trying to trace an old friend who may be on Email, these sites may be able to help. Simply enter the persons name, press a button, and these sites will let you know the Email addresses of anyone of that name they know of. Some also let you search by other criteria such as Country, town, interests, old school, etc.
| BIGFOOT  | FOUR-11  | INFOSPACE  | INTERNET ADDRESS FINDER |
| POPULUS  | SUCHEN.DE (*)  | SWISSINFO (*)  | SWITCHBOARD  |
| WORLD EMAIL DIRECTORY | |||
This German site (In English) will send your search to several of the above directories in one go. Very useful, but on the downside you can only search by name.
This is one of my favourites. If you're someone who spends hours checking through all of your favourite webpages to see which ones have changed, this one is for you.
Register your favourite URLs with this service, and it will check each page at least once every few days for you, and send you an Email when a page has changed.
Since this service only checks pages occasionally, this service is not suitable for use on pages that change very frequently. Also as this service seems to go down from time to time (Though this happens only occasionally, and is always only a temporary problem) I would not recommend relying on this service in situations where you URGENTLY need to know when a page changes.

I discovered this service completely by accident. It lets you set up your own bookmarks page on their website, enabling you to call it up from any computer or any browser. This would be useful to anyone who doesn't always use the same computer, or who travels a lot, in the same way that web-based Email is useful for such people. There are 3 different options for adding bookmarks to your file, so one of them is bound to suit you. One thing you should be aware of if you are concerned about privacy, is that all newly set-up bookmark files are publically accessable by anyone. There is an option to make your list private, but you have to choose this option, I would have thought it would have made more sense to make private files the default. Still, privacy is not a problem, as long as you are aware of this. For an alternative way to set up an online bookmark file (though not with a service designed for this purpose) see Links Page Hosting.
Forgetting dates of Birthdays, wedding anniversaries, etc? Well, this site links to reminder services that can send you Email reminders just prior to any particular date you register with them.
Remailers enable you to send Emails anonymously. On this page I have only quoted links to Remailers that are simple to use, and that I have tested myself to ensure they work. It should be noted that Remailers should not be abused by using them for illegal purposes, and that the service provider may reveal the real identity of anyone who uses them in such a way. Note also that it is not possible to reply to any messages sent by any of the services mentioned in this section (though I believe there are others that can be replied to .. maybe after I've done a bit more research I'll include some details on them too). Finally, If you want to use any of these services, I strongly recommend you test them out by sending yourself a message first.
This is the simplest way to send an anonymous message by Email. Simply follow the link below, fill in a simple form, press a button, and hey presto your message arrives at its destination a few minutes later. There are several sites on the internet that claim to offer this type of service, but the ones linked below are the only ones I've been able to get to work in practise.
Update 3rd August 1998. - The Myemail link has been out of action "for a few weeks" for several months now!, I'll leave the link in for now, but may remove it soon. I've added an extra link to a similar service run by London Virtual Mall (Brits please note, this is London Canada, not our one!)
LONDON VIRTUAL MALL - ANONYMOUS MAILERThese remailers work very differently from the one above. A message is sent (using your normal Email software, or Web-based Email) addressed to the remailer (*NOT* the address of the person the message is being sent to) with certain codes placed on the first lines of the message to indicate where you want the message sent (you can also use some other options - like building in a delay to the time taken for the message to arrive.).Finally, you may like to know that for extra security, it is possible to "chain" remailers (send a message through several Remailers).
[email protected] - For instructions on how to use this remailer visit the website of replay.com or send a blank Email to [email protected] with "remailer-help" (without the quotes) as the subject
[email protected] - For instructions on how to use this remailer send a blank Email to [email protected] with "remailer-help" (without the quotes) as the subject

I assume that anyone who's found this page will already know what a Search Engine is. Here are some links to some of the better known general search engines.
| ALTA VISTA | AOL NETFIND | DEJA NEWS | EXCITE |
| HOTBOT | INFOSEEK | LYCOS | MAGELLAN |
| WEBCRAWLER | YAHOO! |
These search engines will send your query to several search engines in one go, I find these quite useful when searching on more obscure topics.
| ASK JEEVES | DOGPILE | HIGHWAY 61 | MAMMA |
|
These search engines specialise in looking at UK sites
| EXCITE UNITED KINGDOM  | INFOSEEK UK |
| UK INDEX | YAHOO! UK & IRELAND |
SEARCH ENGINE WATCH - Everything you ever wanted to know about search engines.
This very well presented site has links to online dictionaries for just about every language you can think of. Whether you're looking for an ordinary English dictionary, a Japanese-Danish dictionary or a Klingon-English Phrasebook (really!), this site will be able to help you.
I, REARRANGEMENT SERVANT - Type in a word or phrase, and this site will calculate every possible (English language) anagram for you.
THE ANAGRAM GENIUS SERVER - Another anagram calculator. This one has several additional options, for example whether you want to include or exclude vulgar words, whether you use UK or US English etc, etc. Results are sent out by Email.
These sites enable you to send someone a "postcard" over the internet. Just visit the site, and fill out a simple form to send your card. With the exception of maxracks, the recipient will be sent an Email telling them to visit a website and enter a unique code number to retrieve their "card". Maxracks works slightly differently in that the whole card is sent as a ".jpeg" (picture) file attached to an Email. For this reason Maxracks is one I would recommend, however I also strongly recommend that you use the preview card option with Maxracks since their cards have a habit of not coming out as you expect first time. I've also now included a link to Hatsoft, since this is the only site I know of that lets you send a music file with your card.
There are too many places offering this type of service to list them all here, So I've just put direct links to a few I have used myself, plus a link to a site that has links to many others.
| THE ELECTRIC POSTCARD  | MAXRACKS  | HATSOFT  |

These sites contain links to sites that can plan journeys by road or by public transport.
RAC - UK Road.
RAILTRACK - UK Rail.
STATION MASTER - UK Train, bus and coach.
SUBWAY NAVIGATOR - Urban rail systems all over the world.

This site has loads of links to sites where you can download some of those fun little programmes that (for example) make a load of insects crawl all over your desktop, or many other equally silly things. It should be noted that since you are downloading files here, the disclaimer on the homepage specifically applies to this section (though having said that I haven't personally downloaded any viruses from any of these sites). Some files come downloaded in Zipped format, where the file has been compressed to make its faster to download, and you will need an unzipping programme to use such files, if you use Windows 95 you need Winzip for this, and you can download a free copy here.

These sites let you set up a personal diary or calendar online.
| EASYDIARY  | JOINTPLANNING  | WHEN.COM  | YAHOO! |
WORLD BIRTHDAY WEB - Enter your name and Email address on the page for your Birthday and expect to get at least half a dozen Happy Birthday Emails from people all over the world. Also has a Birthday Reminder service, but as you can only get reminders for Birthdays of others already on the World Birthday Web list, this service is only of limited use.
