This page is continually being updated. |
Since coming onto the internet in 1997, I have been fascinated by the various free "Gadget" (i.e. Utility) type services that are available on the net, but have been disappointed not to have found a decent "beginners guide" to such services. So . . . I decided to produce one myself, and this is what I came up with!
This site contains links to all sorts of these "gadget" type services, plus a brief description of what each type of service does, written in such a way that a beginner would understand.
Gadgets tend to fall into 2 categories, those that are useful to webmasters (people who put their own pages on the net), and more general gadgets that would be of interest to all net users. If you are new to the net, then you will probably only be interested in the General Gadgets Page, but if you are thinking of setting up your own page, then the Webspace Providers section on the Webmasters Gadgets Page would be a good place to start.
Please note that this is not a complete guide, in fact I imagine there are many other gadgets on the internet that I haven't discovered yet, and what's on this page is probably only the tip of the iceberg, but I intend to do more research so that I can continually add new items to this site. I also hope I will receive some ideas from visitors (see bottom of page for contact details). If you know of any site that both fits the theme of this page and is a free service, then let me know about it and I will consider putting it on here.
Although all the information on this page is given in good faith, I cannot guarantee that any of the items listed on this page will do what they claim to do, nor can I guarantee that they will not do nasty things like pass on viruses or pass on Email addresses to spammers etc.. etc...Also, whilst I believe all things mentioned on this page are free services, I cannot guarantee this. Some items are free for only a limited number of uses or a limited time period. Advert banners do not necessarily advertise free services.
Saturday 14th November 1998 - This change sees a couple of new sections on the general gadgets page, - they are on Fun Downloadable Gadgets and Online Diaries. Remember those useful multi-search engines that send your search to several search engines in one go? Well I've just discovered two more, and you'll find links to them in the Search Engines section. Finally for the general gadgets page, there are a couple of new links to UK rail & road Journey Planners.
On the Webmaster's page, there's one new section on Links Page Hosting, there are a couple of new links in the Survey Forms section, and there's a new way of promoting your site with details of a "Tell your friend about this site" form in the Website Promotion section, there is also a working example of this service on this page here.
A few sections marked "updated" have had minor changes made to them (eg removal of dead links.)
Finally, in order to unclutter the homepage, I have moved all of my Awards onto their own Awards Page.
To view details of previous updates to this page, see the History Page
You can use this form as a simple way to tell your friends and family about this site (hint, hint!!)
