IRQ Conflicts

Q: How can I change the IRQ of either my video card or network card? They share the same IRQ, which I believe is giving me some problems with my DSL modem. I tried to change it in the device manager, but was told I can't change the resource.

A: IRQ is an abbreviation for Interrupt Request Line. Every peripheral needs a way to get the attention of the central processing unit. This is done through IRQ. Peripherals can't share interrupt lines-- it confuses the computer.

There is no manual way to change IRQ with a modern PCI card. Normally, you shouldn't have to worry about this. Plug and play should automatically find a free IRQ and install the card correctly.

It's possible to have devices that seem to share IRQ, but don't. For example, if an IRQ is reserved for a slot that doesn't usually use an interrupt, such as a video card, the video card will show up as using that IRQ when it is not. Unless Windows tells you there is a conflict, odds are there isn't.

If Windows tells you there is a conflict there are some things you can do about it.

  • Move cards around. Changing cards will often solve the problem.
  • Delete the entry for the device from the device manager and reboot.
  1. Open System Control Panel.
  2. Click on Device Manager Tab.
  3. Select device and delete.
  4. Reboot.
  • The last resort is to enter your BIOS. This is a Black Diamond tip for advanced users.
  1. When you start the computer, press the F2 key to enter setup.
  2. Press the right arrow to get to the Advanced menu.
  3. Press the down arrow to Plug & Play O/S.
  4. Selecting yes lets the software decide what IRQs to use. You can toggle yes/no with the minus key.
  5. Press F10 to save and exit.
