Product Information
The Cygnet Series 1800 Jukebox family includes several high-performance robotic systems that provide on-line access to a large number of double-sided 12-inch storage media (disks) and associated drives.

Series 1800 Jukeboxes support ATG GD 9001/SE, Philips LMS LD4100 and LD6100, and Sony WDD-930-01 12-inch optical WORM (Write Once Read Many) drives; and Nikon’s DD121-1AJ Rewritable Magneto-Optical drives.

Jukeboxes can be ordered separately or, in some cases, as complete subsystems with drives integrated and tested at the factory. Cygnet Storage Solutions Inc. is an ISO-9001 certified company for the design, manufacture, sales and support of jukeboxes, featuring high performance and reliability and including the following models:

When configured for ATG GD 9001/SE, Philips LMS LD4100 or LD6100 drives, or Sony WDD930-01 drives, the jukeboxes and drives can be ordered as subsystems, completely integrated and tested at the factory, with all cabling and connectors included. When configured for Nikon DD121-1AJ drives, the jukebox must be ordered as an integrated subsystem.

While each jukebox is configured to operate with a specific drive type, the general characteristics of the jukebox are the same. Cygnet Series 1800 jukeboxes include up to three separate modules: a drive/media module, an elevator module, and a media module. The ASM, 1602 and 1802 each have a drive/media module and an elevator module. The 1803 also has the additional media module. The model 1602 can be field-upgraded to a model 1802, which can in turn be field-upgraded to a model 1803.

System Description

The drive/media module contains an exchange counter, space for disk drives and cartridges, and a media insertion device, the mailbox. LEDs on the mailbox provide operator feedback of cartridge position status. The drive/media module also contains a power distribution unit and power circuit breakers, and provides AC power to the drives and the elevator module. The power distribution unit, located in the bottom rear of the modules, houses the primary line power wiring and the transformer taps that are used to select the appropriate primary power voltage.

The elevator module utilizes a belt-driven carriage to transport cartridges from one location to another, and houses the sensor and control electronics used to position the cartridge. The elevator module provides fully automated cartridge handling, containing the robotics that move and exchange the cartridges to and from the storage slots, drives and mailbox. An elevator mechanism enables the vertical movements necessary for these functions. A carriage with two crossfeed mechanisms that grip cartridges enables the horizontal movements in and out of storage slots and disk drives.

The media module (1803 only) provides storage for 80 optical disk cartridges, bringing total storage capacity up to 141 optical disk cartridges, depending on the number of drives.

A standard RS-232 interface provides jukebox external command and control communications, with a SCSI interface available. All motions performed by the jukebox are monitored by sensors to ensure data and system reliability. The sensors are continuously monitored and status is reported to the interface for processing by the external host.

A SCSI interface is also available to allow SCSI host control of the jukebox. Both single-ended and differential SCSI options are offered, conforming to the ANSI SCSI-2 standard.
