To complement the Adrenaline hardware accelerators, Kofax offers a
family of Adrenaline software engines. Using these engines, developers
and end users gain access to all the advanced functions found in ImageControls.
Performance of the Adrenaline software engines depends on the speed of the user’s PC. Although not equal to the speeds achieved with a Kofax hardware accelerator (especially if image processing features are enabled), these engines are suitable for a wide range of low-end and mid-range scanners, and provide a low cost entry point for users with low-volume scanning requirements.
There are three engines in the Adrenaline family. All three support Windows 3.x (16-bit), Windows 95 (16-bit and 32-bit) and Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 (32-bit) environments. The Adrenaline engines can be used only with applications written with ImageControls v2.0.
Adrenaline Image Processing Engine: The flagship of the Adrenaline software family, the Image Processing Engine supports all ImageControls v2.0 image processing features as well as providing all Adrenaline Capture Engine functionality. Built for sophisticated capture applications that require forms recognition, bar code recognition, deskew, line removal, deshade, edge enhancement, and other sophisticated image processing, but where high throughput is not required. The Adrenaline Image Processing Engine is also ideal for building batch-oriented image processing servers. The engine is sold on a per seat basis.
Adrenaline Capture Engine: This powerful engine supports ImageControls v2.0 software-based scanning and all Adrenaline Retrieval Engine functionality. It is ideal for driving basic scan, display, and print applications. The Adrenaline Capture Engine is priced on a per seat basis.
Adrenaline Retrieval Engine: A royalty-free engine that supports
all ImageControls v2.0 display and print functionality. Ideal for building
simple viewers or retrieval applications, this engine ships with the ImageControls
v2.0 toolkit. Developers can freely duplicate and distribute this engine
royalty-free with their applications.
