Optical Storage Made Simple

Ascent Storage is a high-performance optical storage manager for Windows NT and Novell NetWare networks. It allows client PCs to access files on standalone optical drives and optical jukeboxes, transparently caches files on local magnetic drives for fast retrieval, and supports automatic administration and backup of optical volumes.

Unlike generic optical drivers, Ascent Storage was designed with the data integrity requirements of document imaging applications in mind. Ascent Storage meets the most demanding data requirements with broad support for the industry’s most popular WORM and MO jukeboxes, along with proprietary recording techniques that guarantee complete data integrity at all times. And unlike generically designed systems, Ascent Storage can always recreate index files for every data file on every
optical platter even if the attached server is completely destroyed.

Document imaging also has unique document lifecycle requirements. In a typical application, documents are accessed frequently when they are initially created, then accessed less frequently as they age except for occasional spurts of activity (for example, when a customer calls with a question about an old transaction). Ascent Storage allows applications to move files to optical only when their usage rate declines and then, through the use of sophisticated retrieval techniques such as staging, caching, and pre-fetching, quickly places sets of documents back on magnetic disks when they suddenly become active again. Ascent Storage completes this lifecycle with full support for off-line volumes, allowing platters of very old documents to be stored on a shelf while still appearing to the user as if they are online.

Management and backup in Ascent Storage are also designed for document imaging applications. Unlike products that require data files to be backed up to tape, Ascent Storage is a pure optical solution that supports mirror volumes and automatic backup of optical platters to matching platters. Backups can be scheduled automatically without shutting down a high-availability system, and backup platters can be moved between different jukeboxes at any time.
