ActiveX controls for building production document imaging applications

Kofax offers the industry’s most comprehensive set of ActiveX controls for building production-level document imaging applications. ImageControls and StorageControls are easy-to-use visual programming tools for commercial developers, VARs, integrators, and corporate developers needing to rapidly create powerful imaging applications for Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT environments.

Both ImageControls and StorageControls are fully compatible with Microsoft Visual Basic (version 4.x, 32-bit), Visual C++ (version 4.x, 32-bit) and ImageControls is also fully compatible with the 16-bit versions of Visual Basic and Visual C++.  Applications developed with ImageControls v2.0 are supported by the complete Kofax family of Adrenaline software engines and hardware accelerators. Applications developed with StorageControls v1.0 are fully compatible with the optical devices supported by Ascent Storage.

ImageControls v2.0

ImageControls v2.0 is a set of ActiveX and VBX controls necessary for adding high volume scanning, advanced image processing, rapid viewing, and networked image printing to 16-bit and 32-bit Windows applications. With its powerful feature set, ImageControls lets developers create applications that speed the document indexing process through automated recognition techniques, increase OCR accuracy and reliability with sophisticated clean-up and enhancement features, and decrease overall storage costs by generating smaller image file sizes. The ImageControls formula for success is the basis for thousands of production-level imaging applications in use today.

There are three versions of ImageControls v2.0 available, each providing varying degrees of functionality.

     Standard

   Gold
     Includes all the features of the Standard Edition plus:     Platinum
     Provides all of the features of the Gold Edition as well as support for: Building A Complete Solution

Using ImageControls v2.0, you can develop production-level applications that speed the indexing of images, increase OCR accuracy, and decrease overall image file size to make your application a cost effective and efficient document management solution. ImageControls provides ActiveX and VBX controls for scanning, automated recognition, image clean-up, forms processing, viewing, and printing of images. ImageControls v2.0 comes complete with the five 32-bit ActiveX controls and five 16-bit VBXs; a Visual Basic and Visual C++ demo program; complete documentation; and a royalty-free version of the Adrenaline Retrieval Engine. End users running applications based on ImageControls will need to have one of the three Adrenaline SW engines or a Kofax hardware accelerator installed.

Scanning
ImageControls v2.0 supports all of the industry’s leading production document scanners at rated speed. ImageControls supports color, grayscale, and black and white scanning. Images can also be imported directly from disk in a variety of file formats. There are ten common dialogs, ready for integration, for users to set scanner settings. Automated Recognition
ImageControls v2.0 speeds the processing of documents that contain patch codes and bar codes by automatically recognizing and translating the coded data each contains.

     Patch Code Recognition. ImageControls will detect and recognize up to six unique patch code types. Patch
     codes can be used to recognize changes in batches, stop the scanner for manual setting adjustment, update scanner
     settings on the fly, or to signify any unique attributes in a set of documents.

     Bar Code Recognition. ImageControls recognizes ten different bar code types, including situations where there
     are different bar codes on the same page. ImageControls can process up to 64 different bar codes on any
     document, no matter their orientation on the document.

Image Cleanup
ImageControls provides improved image quality for OCR processing through a variety of image clean-up features.

     Black Border Removal. Performed simultaneously with scanning, this feature eliminates the black edges
     generated by scanners with black backgrounds. Performing this process reduces the image file size while improving
     legibility.

     Deskew. In order to correct image skew created during scanning, the deskew feature employs an algorithm that
     compensates for image skew resulting in images with zero degree skew. The deskew feature does not require lines
     or leading edge borders to operate.

     Speckle, Shade, and Streak Removal. These features eliminate random noise (speckles and streaks) as well as
     shaded backgrounds either present on the original document or generated at time of scan.

     Line Removal and Character Repair. Implementing this feature serves to eliminate all unwanted horizontal and
     vertical lines. Features within the module enable developers to provide automatic character repair when desired
     text and unwanted lines intersect.

     Image Filtering. This module can be used to perform a variety of enhancements on lines and characters. Lines
     and characters can be smoothed, thickened, thinned, filled, or outlined in order to make them more legible and
     recognizable.

Forms Recognition

     Forms Recognition. ImageControls v2.0 can match scanned images against sets of known forms by comparing
     each scanned image against a catalog of master forms. Complex algorithms enable ImageControls to learn the
     properties of each master form, perform page registration, and return a list of the most likely matches.
