The new Philips Infinity 6000 family of 12-inch optical mass storage products provides permanent data storage for reliable high-end solutions. Philips Laser Magnetic Storage (Philips LMS) continues its optical leadership with the highest performance optical drives available on the market. Infinity 6000 RapidChanger doubles the disk capacity and quadruples data transfer performance of the Series 4000. As the second generation evolution of its predecessor, the Series 4000, these new and improved dual head drives increase the per-disk capacity from 5.6GB to 12GB. The Infinity 6000 RapidChangers also increase the number of disks from five to six, increasing drive capacity. And the Infinity 6000 family is downward read compatible to the Series 4000.

PHILIPS INFINITY 6000 FAMILY

The Philips Infinity 6000 family of optical products offers a smooth migration for mass storage requirements of gigabytes to terabytes. The family includes different economies for both capacity and performance: the LD6100 12GB drive, the LF6600 72GB six disk RapidChanger, and the LF6602 144GB 12 disk dual drive RapidChanger. The RapidChangers are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between single-disk and large jukebox systems. Fast access to customer data is provided by 2.5 second disk exchange time. A read-ahead feature fills the 2MB data buffer giving immediate access to data. For multi-terabyte capacities, compatible jukebox products are available from leading suppliers.

DUAL HEAD TECHNOLOGY - MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE

Critical to the success of an application using optical storage is the speed with which a document can be retrieved. Dual head simultaneous transfer provides immediate on-line access to the entire 12GB per drive. Using striping techniques similar to RAID technology, data streams are read from (or written to) both sides of the disk simultaneously giving sustained transfer rates of 2.7MB/s (burst of 10MB/s). This provides nine to 18 times more data under the head per drive than single head 51/4-inch drives. The Philips Infinity 6000 family outperforms 51/4-inch jukebox systems more than 4 to 1 in independent benchmarks.

The Philips Infinity 6000 family provides the highest optical retrieval rates combined with the largest growth path for the demanding near on-line mass storage needs of document imaging, networks, UNIX HSM, and regulated or random access intensive applications. Philips LMS true ablative WORM removable glass media provides approved permanency meeting mission critical government and evidentiary requirements. Philips LMS has dual vendor sources for 12-inch glass media, where those requirements are necessary.
