NCTP-- The Future Of Tape Technology Has Arrived

Philips LMS brings you NCTP, the first of a technologically advanced family of high performance tape drives. NCTP cost effectively combines high capacity with performance while supporting UNIX, network, and NT range of applications. User storage needs are expanding geometrically and moving to higher capacities. With both channel bandwidth and tape transfer rate growth, more user needs are being met by online and nearline tape applications. NCTP delivers by providing the fastest transfer rate (10MB/sec) in its capacity (20GB native) and price range. This performance easily meets customers' expanding application retrieval needs and ever shortening backup windows.

Square Tape offers:

Autoloader and library support have been jointly developed with the drive and are immediately available to serve growing automation needs. NCTP provides twice the performance of alternate tape technologies at half the cost of high-end models and meets critical needs within budget. NCTP's planned family evolution anticipates the needs of the future while protecting today's investments. Also, NCTP is the only new performance tape that will read 18 and 36 track tapes. The SmarterChoices philosophy provides users best-of-class price/performance selection of mass storage solutions from Philips, the technology leader.

High Performance

NCTP's native 10MB/sec throughput and native capacity of 20 GB per cartridge exceeds today's user needs. NCTP has the performance and capacity required for servers as well as mainframes, networks, and workstations. The drive's, $0.004 cost per megabyte of storage makes it extremely cost effective over all other storage mediums. Applications are quickly being moved from traditional mediums such as hard disk and put on high performance low cost tape. NCTP's unequaled price/performance is uniquely positioned to bridge the chasm between low cost storage and high performance by increasing data transfer for backups, archival, HSM and near on-line storage. This exciting new tape drive asset has the raw native power to transfer 36GB per hour for each drive. SmarterChoices to speed your applications performance.

Reliability

Half inch tape technology remains the standard for reliability in high usage enterprise environments. NCTP is Philips' new generation of this proven technology, built on the foundation of market share leadership in 36-track 3490E markets. This third generation tape drive uses Philips' patented short tape path allowing tracking densities exceeding other technologies and handles new thinner metal particle media. Having the standard 1/2-inch proven technology experience and standard of excellence provides a strong foundation for the new and improved NCTP technology. Current and future evolutions will be read compatible protecting customers' tape investment. The time proven short tape path, low 10 -17 bit error rate, low field replaceable unit (FRU) count, and proven ISO 9002 certified manufacturing process ensure tape reliability for mission critical applications. The only recommended preventative maintenance for NCTP is cleaning the tape heads periodically when indicated by the operator panel. SmarterChoices for reliability and stability.

High Capacity

NCTP's high capacity cartridges (20GB uncompressed) are particularly cost effective. They have 25 times more capacity than the previous generation of 36-track tape. Data compression algorithms, using IDRC for 18 and 36 track or LZ1 for NCTP format, can increase cartridge capacity. NCTP delivers higher performance and capacity than today's low cost alternatives at a fraction of the price of other high end choices. Blending high capacity cartridges with a full line of automation supports users' changing needs. Planned capacity and performance increases in future NCTP generations will protect users' current investment while meeting future requirements. SmarterChoices today and tomorrow.

Full Automation Support

At introduction, NCTP's support of a wide selection of automation choices, insures the capacity, scaleability, and growth path perfectly suited to user's applications. Directly from Philips LMS the 7 or 14 cartridge AutoLoaders and the new BLACKJACK 21 cartridge entry library provide the automation capacity and scaleability needed by distributed or lower capacity applications. Larger capacity library support is available from a variety of popular industry leaders. NCTP's new low profile desktop drive is just as much at home in an office environment as in a standard 19-inch rack or library. SmarterChoices in automating the future.

Compatibility and Interchange

NCTP is the only new technology performance drive that provides a migration path for backward read interchange with 18 and 36 track tapes. This protects users' large tape install base investment while allowing migration to 25 times the capacity and over 3 times the data transfer performance. NCTP allows the user to keep pace with the latest technology without the need to transition the current 1/2-inch cartridge investment into another format.

NCTP provides a wide array of platform and application support in the mainframe, server, network and NT marketplace. The high end features and performance add zip to backup, restore, retrieval and file migration applications. The industry standard SCSI-II fast and wide interface is supported. Fibre channel arbitrated loop will be supported in a future product release. SmarterChoices for your business solutions.

Flexibility

NCTP drives are field upgradeable to 19-inch rack, 7 or 14 auto cartridge loaders (ACL), BLACKJACK 21 entry libraries, and several large popular libraries. NCTP's flexibility provides an easy scaleable upward migration path from gigabytes to terabytes. NCTP is 100% SCSI interface compatible with Philips LMS current 36-track tape products allowing immediate software connectivity with major application vendors -- Legato-NetWorker, EMASS-AMASS, Computer Associates Cheyenne-ARCServe, Seagate (Palindrome)-Backup Director, and Software Clearing House REEL products. NCTP is supported by a wide variety of popular platforms, ensuring easy integration to current systems. SmarterChoices for flexibility.
