PD Library is a multi-disk, multi-drive autochanger. The PD Library is an extension of the stand-alone PD/CD-ROM drive, making it the first multi-disk storage and retrieval device that allows access to both CD and rewritable PD disks from a single source.

The PD Library provides a cost-efficient means for multiple computer users to share data from a common data repository. Networked computer users can share CD-ROMs stored in the PD Library as well as write their own data to rewritable 650MB PD disks. Once written and stored in the library's disk tower, a PD disk can be quickly retrieved and shared by others on a network.

As a data storage format, the PD Library is ideal for several new applications including video-on-demand, where video stored on a CD-ROM and/or a PD disk can be made available to multiple locations, e.g. in hotels, libraries and hospitals.

To load disks, the PD Library uses a 10-disk magazine which is capable of housing either 10 CD-ROMs or 10 "naked" PD disks, i.e., without the protective housing of the cartridge. Once loaded, the patented micro optical head employed by the PD drives in the new libraries automatically differentiates between a CD and a PD disk.

PD Media is reliable and safe, has a shelf life exceeding 30 years, and can be rewritten over 500,000 times. The PD is capable of transferring data at 870 kilobytes/second.
