Automated Backup Eases Administrative Pressures
Because regularly scheduled backups are the best
way to ensure reliable data protection, Seagate Backup Exec fully automates
network backups with a comprehensive scheduling system with true, unattended
operation. Point-and-Click scheduling allows you to protect your servers
and workstations easily. You can schedule backups to run transparently
while systems are in use or during off-hours when files are closed and
accessible. Seagate Backup Exec keeps a watchful eye on your network -
with its Smart Client technology that detects impending hardware failures
on Windows 95-based Compaq systems and automatically initiates an unattended
backup to protect the systems data.

are becoming, to allow them to best manage their backup system, so that
unattended backups are not stalled by insufficient tape capacity for the
backup.
Restore Features
-
Read Compatible - The ability to read tapes created
by ARCserve 4, 5 & 6 and SIDF tape formats, makes transitioning from
ARCserve easy and safe.
-
File Grooming - Enables you to restore directories
containing data, while excluding empty directories.
-
Disc/Tape-Based Catalog - Provides on-demand locator
information for file access and full/partial catalog.Management Features
-
Windows NT workstation client - This new capability
allows flexible installation and management for accounts standardized on
Windows NT Workstation who may not have access to a Windows 3.x or Windows
95 system for installing and maintaining the backup system.
-
Job status and results can be sent via Novell's MHS
or GroupWise - Backup Exec for NetWare provides the flexibility to
e-mail job completion status as well as job detail results.
-
Novell NWAdmin support - Seagate Backup Exec for
NetWare v7.5 supports both the 16 and 32 bit
versions of Novell's NWAdmin network administration program, providing
a single tool to administer the server and the backup system from a single
console, allowing the user to launch Backup Exec to administer the backup
system directly from the NWAdmin console simply by clicking on an icon.
-
Support for TapeAlertTM technology - For supported
tape drives and autoloaders, the drive can communicate directly with Backup
Exec and inform the user when the drive is operating in a degraded state,
but has not yet failed. This increases reliability of the backup process
by predicting failures before they actually occur, and decreases administrator
burden by allowing them to plan hardware maintenance before the problem
becomes critical.
-
Now supports HP OpenView for Unix - This new feature
allows Backup Exec to send SNMP traps to HP OpenView for Unix management
consoles.
-
Agent Accelerator now supports TCP/IP protocol as
well as SPX - For environments that have standardized on the TCP/IP protocol,
this capability prevents the administrator from having to install Novell's
proprietary SPX protocol on the remote servers they want to protect.
-
Support for IBM ADSM (Option) - This feature allows
Backup Exec to operate with IBM's ADSM system for data storage, providing
mainframe-level hardware protection of user data, while still maintaining
administration and control of the backup process at the server level.
-
User can manually select to extend the schema to
support Backup Exec - This new capability prevents the user from having
to completely re-run the installation process to create the NDS schema
extensions when the user initially installs Backup Exec without sufficient
rights by allowing the user to easily add the necessary schema extensions
for Backup Exec after the installation is complete.
-
Support for Low Admin Backup Mode (LABM) - LABM totally
automates weekly backups in single server environments using a tape autoloader
to provide reliable, hands-off backup, with automatic error recovery, automatic
head cleaning, and automated tape management.
-
Windows-Browser/installer - This eliminates the requirement
for a CD-ROM drive on the server and allows Backup Exec to be easily installed
on the server remotely from the workstation.
