Sony's 5.25-inch optical drive, the SMO-F540 Series, sets a new standard
for multifunction magneto optical drives. Continuing Sony's tradition of
ANSI-and ISO-standard drives that are compatible with 1.3 GB and 650 MB
media, this 2.6 GB drive offers double the capacity at near hard drive
speed, making it an ideal storage solution for today's performance-intensive
applications.

High Performance
The SMO-F540 Series boasts the highest spindle speed in the industry-3,600
rpm. This high spindle speed results in an exceptionally high sustained
transfer rate of 4MB/sec with 2.6 GB media, independent of any benefits
from caching. The spindle speed also maintains a low average latency time,
thus providing faster access to your mission-critical data.
Accelerated by S-Cache
Sony's proprietary buffering/caching algorithm, featured in the SMO-F531
optical drive, set a benchmark for burst rate that is unrivaled in the
industry. The SMO-F540 Series S-Cache utilizes the same smart algorithms
to maintain a high burst rate of 5 MB/sec. This rate combined with the
fast sustained data transfer rate results in exceptionally fast and efficient
data retrieval.
Improved Functionality
While the SMO-F540 Series is a standard 5.25-inch half-height drive,
its unique motorized media eject mechanism has fewer moving parts than
the industry-standard spring mechanism. The resulting increase in reliability
and ease of use combined with the drive's light weight and minimal power
consumption enable it to operate flawlessly for an estimated 100,000 Power
On Hours (POH) in any desktop or network environment.
Easy Integration
Sony makes it easy to upgrade to the high capacity SMO-F540 Series,
which can integrate into any computing environment regardless of the operating
system. The drive has a standard SCSI-2 connector, and driver software
can be written or purchased from over twenty qualified vendors.

The SMO-F540 Series optical drive continues a Sony tradition established
in the SMO-F531 optical drive of increasing MTBF and MSBF. With an MTBF
of 100,000 POH and an MSBF of 500,000, the SMO-F540 Series is an excellent

workstation, or high-end network.
