ABOUT THE LETTERS | ||||||||||||
Reading. July 8, 1855 Cousins Nathaniel and Cynthia I was reminded yesterday by receiving a paper the Postdam Currier and Journal, that we had not received any communication from any of our New York friends for a long time and had not written to anyone of them for a long and perhaps onger time, so I take this Sunday afternoon, while Sabrina is going to meeting to address you. How are you and your family? Is Aunt and all of our Cousins well? The last time we heard from you Cousin Nancy was very unwell, suppose to be in consumption. We received 2 letters last winter one from Cousin George. The other from Cousin B Franklin. In both of those letters they spoke of Nancy as being in a consumption. Not having heard otherwise we believe her to be still living and hope to hear that she has got well again. My health has been quite poor this seasoib. I am now much better then I was early in spring. Work some when I cant well help it. Sabrina is healthy, has been usually good the most of time since she was sick last fall, although at present she is rather sleepy and tired. Guess she has the jaundice. All of your other eastern cousins are well. We have been talking of going to Illinois some time this season and have not entirely given it up yet. If we do go to Illinois we shall probably go in the month of August and return in October by the way of Northern New York and give you a call. Is cousin George married again? Franklin wrote he was about getting married. Again what is he doing? Where is Cousin Franklin? What is Luman doing? Is Mary Jane in Indiana? The season is rather backward but the crops look ?? The prospects is good for a harvest. Haying is all od a fortnight later than it ws last year. Not yet finally commenced. Maybe you are looking for a ?? ??. We want to purchase flour butter and potatoes a little higher than we have for some time past. Flour is a little cheaper then it has been, we can now buy the best for $?? per lbl Butter for 28 cts for lb has been 10 cts. Potatoes 1.12 old ones, new don't know guess for $4 havent bought any. It is thought that potatoes will be less than 50 cts per bushel at drying time if the rot don't take them. The farmers have planted more than usual. The early part of the season with us was very cold and unusually dry. Of late it has been very warm with rain in abundance. We haven't heard from any of you ?? Western folks of late. Uncle Samuel's family were all well at the last advice, Don't know but we shall go to see them soon, The girls are all at home. I believe we wrote Cousin Franklin that Cousin Susan was going to be married to a Doctor, a man that attended the medical lectures with him. I then supposed the marriage would have taken place long before this but now I must take it back and write that she is not going to be married, the Dr has guit and she is still in the matrimonial market. If her name had been Mary I might have known better then to have any such thing as Sunt says she never knew a Mary Baldwin to get married. Mary ?? near getting married last year but it was no go. Hope your girls will get married when they get old enough, without so much going to get married as has been the misforturne of some of the Baldwin girls, especially the Mary's. If Mary ?? is at home give her a joke for me. Remember us to your Mother and to all of our Cousins. Please write soon. Sabrina sends her special regards with the respects of your Cousin Jonathan
