ABOUT THE LETTERS | ||||||||||||
New York, Aug 10, 1856 Dear Parents, I have seated myself again after so long a time to answer your last letter. Or rather three letters in one. I was very glad to hear from you all. I am well and hope these few lines will find you all in the same good health. Frank I suppose is quite well by this time and able to work some perhaps. I suppose you8 are haying there by this time. Who have you got to help you this haying. I would like to be there through haying and harvesting - first rate. But I cannot. How is hay and grain in St Law this season. It has been very dry here this summer. It is very healthy here and has been all summer. There has not been a case of Cholera to my knowledge. A good many are afraid the yellow fever will brake out here this fall. But I hope not. If it does I think I shall be for leaving. You ask what my business is. Well I have no particular business. Although I have something to do every day. I am an extra hand sometimes in the office sometimes on the stage. Last week myself and a man with me went up to Sing-Sing and got twelve horses and brought them down here. I have been up to Mr. Williams and since have been here. He lives in West Chester Co about 40 miles from York. This coming week I am a going down on Long Island about 40 miles to carry a party of fisherman. I shall be gone about five days. I suppose Miss Selleck is with you yet. Give her my best respects. And Laura I suppose is in her school yet. Tell her I am a coming up some afternoon to go to school if I can find time. I suppose Mr Ira Selleck lives down at the yet. Give them my respects when you see them. Has Emily go home yet. How Uncle Frank now failing I suppose all the time. Tell him I would like to see him but I never expect to see him again. You ask what kind of a boarding place I have. I have got a very good place. It is a regular boarding house. It costs me about $4 per week for my room boarding and washing. Well I work and earn my money I get $9 every Saturday night when I loose no time. Well I think you must be tired trying to read this scroll before this time so I will close directly. Oh! I never received any Potsdam paper. I wish you would send me another one. See if I can get that . And when you receive this get about five or six heads together and write me a good long letter. My best respects to all who may inquire for me and a share for yourselves. I will close for this time. From your son L Edson Baldwin No. 423 Tenth St New York |
