Hoffman's spunky style swings students into shape

With plenty of energy and lots of inspiration, Sheila Hoffman brings students together, in the gym and in the classroom, as a family of her own.

Growing up in Glenside Pennsylvania and graduating from Abington High School, Hoffman began her career attending Westchester University for four years.

She majored in health and physical education. Throughout high school Hoffman played hockey and lacrosse and continued playing lacrosse throughout her college career.

“From a very young age, physical education was my favorite,” said Hoffman. Though also interested in fashion design, Hoffman was inspired by an amazing sixth grade gym teacher and she decdided to follow her dream.

Hoffman’s parents were also a great inspiration. “ I have terrific parents who are both teachers,” said Hoffman. “They provided me with insight on what teaching and education was all about.”

After 26 years of teaching in the Neshaminy School District, Hoffman now thinks of students and staff as family.

She has been teaching at the High School since 1984, however she has taught at all levels. “There are positives and negatives with all levels but my strength is at the High School level, where I can make the greatest impact on students,” said Hoffman.

The best part about teaching is the “interaction and relationship with kids,” said Hoffman. While the worst part is the paper work. "I am thankful to have summers off,” Hoffman added.

Hoffman has been happily married for 26 years. Her husband, and college sweetheart teaches health, physical education, drivers education, and is a football coach. “Our life is complete,” said Hoffman.

Teaching students is not just a job to Hoffman. “ It is my responsibility to bring out the positive and develop positive self-esteem in every kid I teach and I always look for the good in every kid,” said Hoffman. "I embrace it and work hard to develop.”

Hoffman is an extraordinary teacher with many admirable qualities about her. "I want to help students make good choices and to feel good about the choices they make."

Not only is this self evident, it is apparent within her teaching, the students she inspires on an everyday basis, and in the school which she helps to make a better place.
