Black History Month honors great American's contributions


Black history month is the time to support the diversity and recognize the progress of many black achievements in America. It gives time for everyone to reflect on and celebrate the history and teachings of blacks all over the world as well.

During the 1920’s , Negro History Week was created and promoted. Over the years February was chosen to represent the accomplishments and contributions of blacks. This is because February includes the birthdays of slave abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Collin Powell a prominent political figure. Powell was the first black officer to hold the highest military post in the U. S. as the chairnam of the U.S. joint cheifs of staff.

Oprah Winfrey is one of the most popular television personalities today. Winfrey has lived the american dream by overcoming the adversities of growing up in poverty.

Nat King Cole (1919-1965) popularized black music. Cole was one of the most poular jazz singers of his time.
