Boys' Indoor Track Focus on Upcoming Spring Season
|
The Neshaminy boys' indoor track team was fixed on one common goal
for the indoor season: reconstruction. As far as the majority of the
team is concerned, all the practicing and competing was leading to
the hopeful success of the upcoming spring track season.
The departure of graduated seniors from last year like record holders
Paul Hallman and Bryant Bevan, to name a couple, left the team with
a young group of track hopefuls and raw talent. Despite the losses,
there is a sense of both optimism and appreciation.
"Because of all the non-returning runners from last year, there
is a lot of room for the rest of us to excel," explained junior
Bob Schwartz. "At this point, that is best thing we could all
hope for." The same feeling resonates among the rest of the team
as newcomers are getting a chance to prove themselves among this year's
returnees.
"There is definitely a huge deficit to overcome," commented
senior captain Jon Vigile. "Luckily for us, the underclassmen
have really picked it up. Their contributions have been a great indicator
for what the spring season holds in store for us."
Although it is apparent that everyone's focus is on spring, we cannot
forget that throughout the indoor season there have been impressive
performances against the numerous and prestigious teams in the area.
Standout performances have been made by junior John Sutcliffe in the
high jump and the 1600 meter relay consisting of seniors Brett McMonagle,
Matt Stafford, and juniors Dave Sherman and Matt Sherlock. Both the
relay team and Sutcliffe qualified for the state meet to be held at
Penn State University on Mar. 3 and 4.
Other notable performances belong to sophomore Chase Holt, juniors
Russ Horrocks and Chris Monreal, and seniors Rob Thomas, Jim Miller
and Dan Quirk.
"We had very little veterans coming back this year, which left
for lots of question marks," coach Harry Fischer said. "We
hoped that we would be able to do well, and it was a great treat,
because we did do well."
So does the coach see eye to eye with the runners for the spring season?
"We could use some more new athletes. I'm hoping that sprints
and field will fill out for us," he said. "If they do, we
could be looking forward to a very productive season." |
