Scoring and soaring their way to future success

Imagine being an athlete who has played at the varsity level for three years and has been among the top athletes at Neshaminy for all of those years. Senior Bryan Lawton and junior Kristen Malloy are two of the few athletes that have accomplished this feat. Lawton is a star on the 'Skins basketball team averaging 15 points a game during the current season. As a shooting gaurd, he has many opportunities to score points. Malloy is currently ranked fourth in the state and 52 in the nation in the long jump. She holds both the long jump record and is a part of shuttle hurdle relay record.

Bryan Lawton
Sport: Basketball

How long have you been playing basketball?
I’ve been playing since I was a kid. I started in third or fourth grade.

What colleges are you interested in?
I’m still keeping my options open until the end of the season.

Do you have any special routine you do before the start of a game?
Before each game I listen to music and concentrate on the game ahead of me, nothing else. I try to block everyone and everything out.

What do you think of your season so far?
I think we’re having a good season. We knew we were capable of winning the division, we just had to go prove it to everyone else.

How does it feel to be a part of the first Neshaminy basketball team to win the S.O.L. Title in 26 years?
It’s an unbelievable feeling to win the S.O.L. Patriot Division. Coach Blair was telling us before the Rock game that the pressure was on them because they had to win. But, I think the pressure was on us too because we needed to win that game to capture the title.

Have you thought about the playoffs at all?
We’re trying to focus on one game at a time, but I think all of us are thinking about districts. We already met our first goal, which was to win the league, and now we’re working on our second goal, to go deep into the playoffs.

Kristen Malloy
Sport: Track

Do you hold any school records?
Yes, I hold the long jump record and I am a part of the shuttle hurdle relay record.

When did you start running track?
I've been running for as long as I can remember. Even before grade school I would run with my mom. She is the head coach of Bensalem's track team, and she has coached for various other teams.

What is your favorite event and why?
The long jump because it's a lot of fun. It's very intense.

How does it feel to be nationally ranked?
It's very scary knowing that you are among the top athletes in America. But I feel the same as I always have.

What awards/honors have you received?
First Team SOL, First Team Golden Team, Honorable Mention SOL, Honorable Mention Golden Team, Scholar Athlete Award, and Courier Times Athlete of the Week.

What is your goal for this season?
To get a state medal. The top six medal at the state meet. I think that would be a huge accomplishment.

Which events have you qualified for in states?
Long jump, 4X 200 relay and the 55 meter hurdles.

How do you prepare for an upcoming meet?
I basically just try to stay focused. I sometimes lose confidence in myself, so I try to stay positive and relax.
