PC Secure Firewall (1.21 MB, freeware, ST)
This is as easy as a firewall can get. Very useful for home-users who want to increase their system's security, but creating a good ruleset requires some practice. This program can only block TCP and UDP packets, leaving free way for ICMP and other potentially dangerous packets. Most attacks, however, employ the TCP/UDP packets. This program can be locked when the ruleset is complete, to avoid that people who are not familiar with the firewall unknowingly authorize connections when the dialog-box pops up. Please note: the firewall works on WINDOWS 95 ONLY and requires winsock 2 installed.
The Port Block (17 KB, freeware, ST)
What can I say? This program can block ports that you know can only be used for malicious purposes. Examples are 12345 (NetBus), 20034 (NetBus Pro) and 31337 (BackOrifice). This program can block up to 3 ports.
Port Monitor (1.40 MB, freeware, TB)
With this utility, you can keep an eye on who is scanning you or attempting connections. It will log the IP and data sent to a logfile. It can monitor up to 20 ports at once, but note that they will be listening then and show up as 'open' on a scan. Ports that are already in use cannot be listened on. Click here for a list of commonly used ports and their associated protocols.
Port Listener (144 KB, freeware, ST)
This util monitors one port on your system. It logs who connects to the port and what data is sent, timestamped and to a file if desired. Very popular.
X-NetStat 3 (441 KB, shareware, ST)
X-NetStat is a very advanced, graphical remake of the old dos program Netstat. It displays the systems current connections with all info with it. Some features are DNS-caching and automatic refreshing of the connections. Fast, useful, good.
ICMP Monitor (27 KB, freeware, TB)
This util logs ICMP flood attacks as they are sometimes used on chat-networks. Good if you've got lots of enemies, otherwise largely useless. Please note that it only logs the attacks and is powerless to defend against them. Only software capable of blocking ICMP flood for win32 is Conseal's PC Firewall. It's shareware and can be found at www.conseal.com.
