Introduction

    Description of Bureau Certified Training Courses


Basic Clean Air Car Course:

Students wishing to become state licensed smog technicians, may take the Basic Clean Air Car Course to Partially satisfy the education prerequisite for either of the license technician categories currently available. Student entering the course are expected to have one year experience/education in the automotive engine performance area prior to entering the course.

The course is a minimum of 48 hours in length, and cover the following topic area:
        Operation Of the BAR90ET emission analyzer system
        Bureau rules and regulations
        Vehicle emission testing procedure for basic area programs

To pass the course, the student must be able to complete the laboratory assignments, and pass a final examination (70% or better)
Bureau certified Basic and Advanced instructors and institutions may provide this course



BAR97 Transition Class:

This course is required if a licensed Advanced Emission Specialist smog technician wishes to operate a BAR97 Emission Inspection System (EIS). Completion of this course provides an endorsement to an existing Advanced Emission Specialists license. This course is not required to obtain or renew a smog license.

There are no prerequisites to take this course

The course (8 hours) covers vehicle emission testing procedures for the Enhanced Area Program using the BAR97 EIS in addition, the course cover basic NOx emissions diagnostics procedures.

To pass the course, the student must pass a written examination (15 of 25 test questions answered correctly).

Only bureau certified Advanced instructors and institutions may provide this course.



 OBDII Update Training Course:

This course is intended to give the student a general overview of the OBD ii operating system used on today's vehicles. The OBD II course length is a minimum of 20 hours, but schools may run class longer. The course cannot end until all students have performed the laboratory assignments. This course has a final examination, that is design around The generic OBD II system, as mandates by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the course will be taught using this generic format.

For a student successfully complete this course for BAR licensing credit, they must:

        Turn in all required reading assignment review question before the end of the course.
        Perform all laboratory assignments to the instructor's satisfaction.
        Pass the final examination with a score of 70% or better.

If a student doesn't accomplish all three tasks, the instructor cannot give the student BAR licensing credit for the course.
