I can just hear the T.V. announcer now, his voice all low and dramatic:
"In a galaxy at war, fighting for its very survival, a new generation of heroes must answer the call to valor and bravery. They are intelligent... motivated... disciplined... and in for the greatest adventure yet. Eight extraordinary individuals must learn to work together, and trust each other with their very lives. Their story begins tonight at eight with the explosive two-hour premiere movie event. They are the finest young people of the Federation... they are the best of the best... they are the cadets of 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy'."
This episode (these two, actually) is the two-hour premiere. In it, we are introduced to our two main characters and the rest of their cadet crew, Gamma Team, as they embark on the specialized training that forges Starfleet officers. Under the watchful eye of an almost legendary predecessor, they find themselves involved in much more than they bargained for.
The title, of course, is taken from the Starfleet Academy motto which is Latin for "from the stars, knowledge." Some plot details are adapted from the novel "Starfleet Academy" by Diane Carey.
