Ocurring sometime during the second season, "Through A Mirror, Darkly" was the first episode that I wrote for the series, and it's ended up being a pretty good story, I think. Interestingly enough, I was worrying over how I could place the cadets in direct control of a starship. And then, I saw DS9's "Valiant." It helped me come up with something that's addressed elsewhere.
As you can probably guess from the title, Jaredan, Kara and crew cross over into the "Mirror Universe" reality, created for the TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror" and revisited in several DS9 episodes. Besides the obvious appeal of being able to present diametrically opposite visions of the main characters, the Mirror Universe is a perfect opportunity to force the characters to face their own doubts, fears and frailties.
I've heard the title (or variations thereof) on numerous occasions, but I'm not sure of where it comes from.
