Education in Punk Science Fiction & Fantasy Cultures
Until I have a message board here, please e-mail me for a manual distribution list on this subject at The first book/sf world I would like to discuss is BORDERTOWN, created by Terri Windling and Mark Alan Arnold. The punk culture presented in the books and short stories beginning in 1986 are relevant to today's disenfranchised youth, runways, club kids and street kids. If you have any links to these topics, please e-mail me.
Education Assumed - Worlds where characters start out educated and ready to go...
Examples include Star Trek's Star Fleet Academy and the education of characters in many pre-1960s space opera/space adventure stories. Unless the character is specifically defined as an anti-hero who found an unorthodox way to learn skills, many of the characters in space opera/space adventure continue to start off well educated and sure of their abilities. See Science Fiction, Fantasy and Adventure Role Models for more discussion of the hero with an extra-ordinary skill or ability. So what about characters with unusual educations, meaning they either left formal schooling behind, never had it, or supplemented it with real-life adventures? I would appreciated your feedback on this topic. Examples include theif characters such as "The Stainless Steel Rat" from the self-named series and "Hans Shadowspawn" from the "Theives World" series. Until I have figured out how to do a posting board, please e-mail me at Mir [email protected].
Alternate Education Systems Anyone?
Regimented systems of training for a specific set of goals that are somewhat alternative to what we have here include Tamora Pierce's "Alanna" novels. See Tamora Pierce's home page for more information.
