In the year 2009, Earth encountered its greatest threat. During this time, all the nations of the Earth united under one main government organization in order to combat this great enemy. This threat was known as the Zentraedi, a race of male giants who possessed immense powers of destruction, an insatiable appetite for war which was only matched by the Meltrandis (Metlandians), the female counterparts to the Zentraedi.
On the day the Zentraedi has scheduled to begin their attack, Earth was to launch its most advanced and powerful space fortress known as the SDF-1 Macross. Since the Fortress Macross was so new and advanced, many tests had not yet been completed. Inspite of the lack of knowledge of its capabilities, the SDF-1 was forced into combat on its maiden voyage.
The fold-system, not yet perfected, malfunctioned when the Macross was forced to activate it. The effects of this malfunction caused the fold-system to disintigrate at the moment of de-fold. The Zentraedi, possessed with a mercilless nature, pursued the SDF-1 to the edge of the solar system with the intention of destroying it. With the destruction of the fold system, the SDF-1 along with its 56,000 civilians on board, was forced to begin its long and arduous journey home without any knowledge of the fate of the Earth.
