A_OBERON.HTM (Detailed)     AMBER The one true world. All others, including our Earth, are merely Shadows...

Son of Dworkin and the Unicorn.

The first king of Amber.  Oberon has lived longer than anyone could remember.  He had many wives and children.  Oberon wears the crown of Amber and the Jewel of Judgement as his office, though he rarely wears the jewel.  As a king, he was known to be harsh, perhaps heartless.  He was feared for his strength and unknown powers and its believed he could be one of the most powerful person alive, save Dworkin.

Oberon and Dworkin discovered the damage in the Pattern a few decades ago (Amber time) but disagreed with his father that the solution is to destroy the Pattern and create it anew.  Perhaps fearing for the safety of Amber and all who lives in the Shadow worlds, Oberon locked Dworkin away and placed a Griffon-like creature to stand guard over the Primal Pattern.  Then, fooled into believing an artefact could be found that can repair the Pattern, Oberon ventured out from Amber, only to be imprisoned.

He was rescued by Dara and formed a temporary alliance with her to save the Shadows.  He bid his time and wanted to review his choice of the next king.  He chanced upon Ganelon and killed him, intending to replace him.  He then strengthened the Shadow he was in, making sure that Corwin would come to him after his escape.  Oberon's part in the story then began, and we see him as Ganelon.

The elaborate plot of his unfolded and confirmed Oberon's choice in Corwin.  He planned for Dara to be the next queen and set into motion the PatternFall.

Oberon believed to the end that the Universe should be saved.  He attempted to repair the Pattern even knowing that it could kill him.  His sacrifice, perhaps as well as Corwin's, enabled us to survive the Time of Chaos.
