Futuristic Terms

Welcome. . .to the guide to the future. In the words of a very wise book, I'd like to give you this simple bit of advice: "Don't Panic!" Having said that I feel that I can now get down to business and begin explaining some of the common terms used in the 2099 world, that the beginner may not understand. Fair enough!? So if you yourself have questions about what a certain term means, please e-mail me and I shall list your term on this page followed by an explanation. Gets easier all the time doesn't it? Well, folks enjoy. . .

1.) Rapture: a very high-powered, mind-expanding, hallucinogen. A perfectly legal drug, albeit an expensive one. Alchemax was the only authorized distributor of the drug, but yet it tends to find its way onto the streets of New York. It is known to be very addictive, physically and mentally. Once it's in your system it genetically bonds to your DNA structure. It can best be described as a need, just like oxygen. It can be very enjoyable, but also highly dangerous if one attempts to fight it's affects. Simply put by the infamous Tyler Stone, "Without Rapture, you'll die. . ."

2.) Thorites: the common term for those who worship Thor, the Thunder God of Marvel's Golden Years. His day is Thursday, or Thorsday as the practioiners call it, and that is when they attend church which is directed by a reverend or priest. Many of the religion's practioners dress in the garbs of the ancients, but many are simple, every day people. It is a widely practiced religion in the world of 2099, and has at least as many followers as the Christian religion. It is also believed that the sacred ally of Thor, Spider-Man, is the Harbinger. Many look to the day that the Thunder God returns.

3.) Spiderites: adherents of an offshoot (one might say a denomination) of the Thorite movement, who worship Spider-Man as the "harbinger of Thor." The earliest known organized Spiderite worship was led by an unemployed Downtown Thorite named Kenny. Kenny was a young man who lived with his wife, Loreen, in a Downtown apartment. After he lost his job at Alchemax, he sank into depression. Unable to find the motivation to hunt for new employment, he chose instead to rely on what he considered the impending arrival of Thor to sustain what remained of his optimism. As the family finances dwindled, so did Loreen's patience; during a fight over dinner, Kenny lost his temper, grabbed his skykite from the closet, and stormed out. Kenny dressed in full Thorite costume and took to the skies, gliding over and around the huge main Alchemax building, bellowing apocalyptic predictions about the advent of Thor. Suddenly, from behind, a shaken and newly transformed Miguel O'Hara leapt onto his skykite from the roof and clawed his way alongside Kenny, identifying himself offhandedly as Spider-Man so Kenny will stop asking him who he is. Kenny took him a bit more literally than Miguel intended: drawing on his knowledge of the 20th century exploits of Thor and his superhero allies of that time, he took this appearance of "Spider-Man" to be a further sign that Thor is coming. Later on, he took the news of his prophetic encounter to an enclave of his fellow Thorites. Unfortunately, they were skeptical; some were even derisive. Kenny stalked off, humiliated. At home, he angrily ordered Loreen to burn his Thorite costume. With nothing else to do, he dropped down in front of the television just in time for a live newscast of Spider-Man (now in costume) fighting with an Alchemax bounty hunter in a public square, surrounded by a crowd of Thorites rallying to the side of the "harbinger of Thor." Instantly, his faith was redoubled, with Spider-Man as its focus. Soon after, Loreen walked into the apartment to the shock of her life: her husband leading a handful of others, in full Spider-Man costume, in prayer at a makeshift altar, worshipping the image of Spider-Man. It may have resulted in Loreen demanding a divorce, but it was also the beginning of what would later become a full-blown religion known as the Spiderite movement.

4.) Nanoids: another term used for the nanotechnology, or nanotech, used in construction, genetic manipulation, or just about anything else you can think of. It is also known for it's destructive use, as it was this that Doom used to destroy the White House. He dropped nanotech on the structure which dissolved all that it touched, including the people! Often used to help repair, and update cyborg systems. Nanoids are micro-computers suspended in a water/saline solution which are about the size of cells, or immense molecules. They can be programmed to do just about anything imaginable, provided that the resources are at hand.

5.) "Indys": an independent corporation, or city, that is unaffiliated with the larger megacorps and transnats. (NOTE: Definition supplied by Charlie Banks. . .thanks Chip!)
