Swiftly, silently she raced through the woods. Wet fronds slapped across her face, causing her face to feel as if it were on fire. How much longer would she have to run? Her breath came in ragged gasps, her heart felt as if it were going to explode. Further and faster still she ran from her hunters. In the distance she could hear the baying of the hounds that persued her.
She stumbled, but continued going. She could see a clearing up ahead. She burst through the last few trees into the moonlit clearing. Small pink and red flowers grew everywhere. In the center of the field a large object rested. She moved closer, uncertain whether it was safer to approach the strange object, or if she should try to hide.
Suddenly the object shifted. Crystal clear blue eyes stared at her. She held her breath. The creature flexed it sinuous neck. It looked at her again, then towards the forest that housed the fast approaching hunters.
"I am safe girl. You may hide amongst me to escape your pursuers," the creature spoke inside her head with a hissing noise. The girl stared in amazement. "Hurry, they are fast approaching," the creature hissed once more.
The girl darted forward. She hid in the crevice between the back leg and the stomach of the thing. It's scales were surprisingly soft and felt like leather. A pleasant heat exuded from its body. She stood there, waiting as the hunters approached. The creature roared and the hunters fled.
"You may come out now," it told her calmly.
She came out of her hiding spot. "Thank you," she told it while shivering. "I have nothing to offer but that."
"That is all I need," it said while unfolding its wings and darting into the clear blue heavens.
The girl stood staring a moment longer. She started walking and found a strange object on the ground. She picked it up. It was a Dragon scale.
