This episode: "The End of Eternity"
The scene opens, we see Drax & Pip discover a 2nd Universal Library, only to be
struck by a mysterious ray. Suddenly they are moving backwards in time!!!!
Next we see the Surfer again bargaining with Galactus! He offers to return to
servitude for only a moment in Shalla Bal's arms! (man, he sells out cheap!).
Galactus, pleased at his "prodigal son's" return, is about to grant his wish,
when The Watcher wakes the Surfer from this dream of his! He is the harbinger
of greater beings he says & we, the enitre universe are in grave danger! The
watcher fades &morphs into Eternity. The Surfer is overwelmed. Eternity
introduces himself & Infinity, then explains "the true nature of the
universe."
He tells Silverado that the universe needs a champion & you're it!
"Only a being like yourself, whose existence in time and space has already been
wrenched from him will not be affected by the reversal that occurs" thunders
Eternity.
Our hero is unsure what he can do! Infinity enlightens him.
"You must use the power of Galactus and the soul of Zenn-La to stop the agent
of Our destruction."
The Surfer asks what evil fiend could do such a thing?
"The tides of malignant entropy are controlled by one you already
know...THANOS...Thanos...thanos..." Infinity fades along with her brother.
The Surfer is unsure he is up to the task. He goes to enlist the help
of the endower of his Power Cosmic, Galactus!
When he arrives he finds Nova & Galactus caught in a temporal loop.
Galactus begins to feed but before he can ingest the power of the planet time
is reversed and he goes unnurished! This cruel teasing time loop is enraging
Galactus to the point of maddness! His hunger is extream & he is no longer
rational! He lashes out at the Surfer accusing him of being the cause of this
torture. Nova defends her friend. "Treachery! The only treachery here is yours!
The last time you saw the Surfer he saved your life! He's not your enemy!"
(Looks like this is the begining of the rift between Galactus & Nova, will
Galactus have a new herald soon?)
The Surfer realizes he is wasting his time here and takes off on his
own searching for Thanos!
As usual Thanos is ranting to his stone version of a blow up doll!
"Chaos see what Thanos has wrought! Mock me now if you dare! Wh-what's that my
Lady? I can't hear your words. You wouldn't be ignoring me, would you? After
all not even a goddess would dare ignore a man who posseses the ULTIMATE
WEAPON! So... young, so very delicate. Soon I'll crush the entire universe
between my hands, in the greatest offering...Ch-Chaos could have."
The Surfer is searching for Thanos. He sees system after system wink
out of existence.
"The Kirby-Lee quadrant! Once home to millions of worlds. Now it is...an empty
victim of the reversal of time."
(A real nice touch of tribute to our hero's creators, double cosmic power
points!)
The champion of the universe watches on in horor as the universe
continues to vanish, but this brings him to an epiphany!
"Shalla Bal! Zenn-La! The people of all the worlds to which I have been. I can
not fail them!! For the first time since I became the Silver Surfer do I fully
understand why the universe needs me! I will not allow it to die!!"
He calls on Eternity & Infinity to aid him by directing him to Thanos.
He attempts to destroy the dimensional nexus Thanos is using as the power
source of his Chronatonic Inversion Ray. Then the learing skull of Thanos'
space craft appears! The Surfer turns his attack towards it! A hologram of
Thanos appears laughing at the Surfer, telling him how futile his attempt is.
They both fire energy beams at each other, which meet with the explosive force
of a super nova!
The End?.... (to be continued!)
What can I say!! This was perhaps the greatest show all season!! Only
The Origin of The Silver Surfer can compare to this intensely suspenseful
episode! Totally tilting right off the cosmic power point scale!
Nit picks! I always have them don't I? But would this be a critique
without them?
1. Why is the Surfer a being out of "time & space?" This is not
properly explained! My only guesse is that it happened durring the missing
Warlock episode "The Forever War." Can't wait to see that one! I am a big
Warlock fan! Still it left me confused! Hell even Galactus was irked that The
Surfer was unaffected by the reverse time effect!
2. Temporal Mechanics! Galactus & Nova are stuck in a time loop! But
though some moments repeat others are new & they seem to remember what has just
transpired! A tape loop repeats the same thing over & over in an endless
cycle! A time loop is the same! Either they should endlessly repeat the same
moments or Galactus should get to eat at some point! You really shouldn't have
it both ways! Now perhaps we can say that this is a time eddy (an eddy is a
swirl & circular though) instead of a loop (& I believe they called it that in
the show) But still if Galactus & Nova get past the point where Galactus has
ingested the planet he should be full at some time! We might also guesse that
since the Surfer is "a being out of time" he has provided some sort of
instability in the "time eddy" which allows his felow cosmic powered to move
forward in time for limited spurts to interact with him!
Cosmic demerits for flaws in temporal mechanics!
3.Since when did Thanos stutter!! I know the thought of Lady Chaos even
talking to him makes him giddy but REALLY! Thanos doesn't stutter!
So in closing this show was top notch!! For those who missed it! Poor
Bastards!!! I fgeel for you! Wait for the re-run & hope they don't pre-empt the
finale!
