Plot

The Enterprise is diverted from a mission by a special transmission for Picard's eyes only. The message is from Keel, an old friend of Picard's who asks to meet him on a nearby mining planet. Picard beams down to find the captains of several ships waiting there. Keel and the other captains, after ascertaining Picard is who they think he is, tells him about a suspected conspiracy within Starfleet citing a strange pattern of orders from Command as evidence. They urge him to be careful. After leaving the planet, the Enterprise comes upon the debris of Keel's ship. Picard asks Data to review the last few months of orders issued by Starfleet. Data reports that there has been an unusual amount of changing of people within the command areas of Starfleet. Picard orders the ship back to Earth where they discover several admirals, including Picard's friend Quinn have been infected by parasitic creatures.

Goofs

  • At the beginning of the episode, while Picard is asleep, Riker tells LaForge to increase speed to Warp 6. Laforge replies, "Aye Sir, full impulse."

In-Jokes

  • The topographical map of the planetary surface was a "very shakey" drawing of Kei and Yuri. Yuri is on the right side, and Kei is upside down.....
  • During the scan of records, we see a parrot wearing a Starfleet shirt, complete with insignia, with nacelles, an obvious reference to Gene Roddenberry. ("The Great Bird" = Gene)

Quotes

Data: "You know counsolor, that the holo-deck can replicate an oceanic enviorment."
Troi: "Data, I's just *not* the same, have you ever been for a real moon- light swimm."
Data: "One can swimm in moonlight ??"
Troi: "How about you mister Worf ??"
Worf: [No] "Swimming is too much like...*bathing*."

Picard: "Starfleet's finest. Fancy meeting you here."

[Where did Picard and Captain Keel meet?]
Picard: "Tau Ceti III. It was a bar...rather an exotic one, as I remember. What do I win?"

Rixx: "And watch your back...Picard."

Picard: "Friends.. Close friends are few and far between, two of the closest are Jack Crusher, may he rest in peace, and Walker Kiel."

Picard: "Friendship must dare to risk, Counselor, or it is not friendship."

Data: "That was not a request, I was simply...talking to myself. A human idiosyncrasy, triggered by a fascination with a particular set of facts, or sometimes brought about by senility, or used as a means of weighing information before means of weighing information before reaching a conclusion, or as a--"
Computer: "Thank you, sir, I comprehend."

Picard: "Mister LaForge, ahead warp six."
LaForge: "Aye, sir, full impulse."

Quinn: "Do Klingons fear death as much as humans? I could snap your neck in a second, but it wouldn't be as much fun."

Remmick: "We seek peaceful coexistence!"

Data: "I believe it was a beacon."
Picard: "A beacon?"
Data: "Yes, sir. A homing beacon, sent from Earth."
