Plot

Data recives word from Admiral Maddox from the cybernetic devision of starfleet, the scientist would like to know more about Data's programing and asks him to descripe a 'normal' day onboard the Enterprise, Data agrees and finds what he thinks appears to be an ordinary day and begins on normal night watch, however Riker releaves Data about 15 minutes early becourse Data is to be the 'father of the bride' when Keiko is gonna marry O'Brien, and Riker thinks that a little extra time would be nice for him. Data goes to see Keiko to prepare for the wedding ceremony, however Keiko chickens out and asks Data to tell O'Brien that she's not ready for the marriage, Data makes the asumption that O'Brien would be happy becouse it'll make Keiko happy. He proves to be wrong and O'Brien gets upset by the message. Meanwhile the Enterprise is ordered to transport a vulcan ambasador into the neutral zone to meet with a Romulan warbird, the idea is to open talks between the two enemies. Data talks to LaForge, who clearly states that he's certain Keiko and O'Brien will be maried, and tells Data he should be sure to find a gift. Data goes searching and encounters Worf, who's also in search of a present, Worf states he does not like human bonding rituals, he finds that there are too much talking, dancing and crying involved. Data has not been aware of that, and asks Dr. Crusher for a dancing lesson. While waiting for her to be off duty, Data recives ambasador T'Pel and provides her with information about the romulan strength along the neutral zone. After some misunderstandings Data gets his dancing lessons and feels quite ready for the wedding, and when the Enterprise enters the neutral zone he returns to his position at OPS, but before he does that he has an encounter with T'Pel who asks him for classified informations, when Data accepts but states that the request will be brought to the captains attention, she cancels her request and explains she was testing his security standard, somehow Data does not find that very convincing, but based on the logic he knows he have to asume that this is the truth. The Enterprise rendezvous with the Romulan as planed, and T'Pel insists on beaming over alone, but when she is to be transported the transporter seems to mailfunction, and T'Pel disappears on the pad, just a few drops of DNA is left over. Mendak cancel the talks as he will only talk with T'Pel, and both ships leaves the area, Data is set to investigate the case, and begins by having O'Brien make several beamings with the unit without any problems. He then turns to Sherlock Holmes methodes and begins to eliminate possiblities, until he ends up at Dr. Crusher's office to study the remains of T'Pel. A non-standard DNA-scan shows that T'Pel didn't die on the pad, in fact the remains found there was made up of replicted material. He informs Picard who chooses to go after the Romulans in belief that they have kidnaped T'Pel, the Enterprise intercepts the warbird without problems, but Mendek refuses that there are any persons captive on his ship. At the same time another warbird decloakes next to the first one, Picard begins to test the currage of the Romulans when another 3 warbirds enters the sector. Mendek finaly reveals the truth to Picard, thereby avoiding any incidents and Picard leaves the neutral zone, feeling a bit cheated, meanwhile Data visits Keiko, who tells Data, much to his surprise, to get dressed up for the wedding. A quite funny episode, that displays how Data experiences the world, it's also intereseting to see that the federation not always get their way, and that the Romulans is capable of doublecrossing everybody, this shows a little human side to the federation, as in conflict with other epsiodes where UFP always has the gain, this time thay fails..

Quotes

[Her first words onboard]
T'Pel: "I'll meet with your captain."

[Data has shown T'Pel to the captain]
Picard: "And this is my first officer commander Riker.."
T'Pel: [Looks at Riker] "Leave us, please"
[Outside, on the bridge]
Riker: "*Charming* woman"
Data: [To log] "Based on the tone in comander Rikers voice, I do not think he is serious about finding Ambassador T'Pel charming, in fact he might mean the exact opposite. Ironi is a form of expression, I have not yet been able to master."

Data: [To log] "It is a good thing I am an android and can perform my duties without emotional concern, otherwise a curtain coursechange towards the neutral zone would make me very......... nervous..."

Data: "Doctor, can I ask a favour of you ??"
Beverly: "Ofcourse Data"
Data: "Would you teach me to dance ???"
Beverly: [Drags Data into the office] "*What* ??"
Data: "I would like to learn how to dance"
Beverly: "Why me ??"
Data: "It was in your service reccord, 1st price in the Tap And........"
Beverly: "Okay, Okay..."
Data: "Have I said something to offend you ??"
Beverly: "It's just that... Is was a long time ago... And I *don't* want to be known as 'the dancing doctor' again..."
Data: "Then your answer is *no*..."
Beverly: [Grabs his arm] "Alright, but let's keep it between you and me..."
Data: "Ofcourse.."

Data: [To log] "Deanna Troi is proberly the friend I understand the least, her life and duties is dedicated to her perseptions of emotions, since I have none, I am proberly as much of a mystery to her as she is to me....."

Data: "Keiko talks to you, O'Brien talks to me... Why do they not talk to eachother ??"
Troi: "That's a good question, I wish I had a good answer for you.."

Data: "I've studied various texts, but I have failed to come up with a suiteble guide...."
Troi: "Suiteble guide for what ????"
Data: "In order to be helpfull, I have tried to calculate the variables involved in a succesful marriage...."
Troi: "Good Luck......."

Data: "Do you think it is the right dicision form them to marry ??"
Troi: "I don't know, Marriage is an agreement to share who you are with somebody else, to grow old together..."

Troi: "Data, You DO have a lot to offer..."

Data: [To log] "Comander Rikers strightforeward way, has always interested me, it might also be the reason to his succes in matters of love, there might be a conection between humor and sex...."

Data: [To log] "The correct to do, would be to report to starfleet, and await further instructions, however, knowing captain Picard, I only perdict a 17% chance he will do so..."

Picard: "A spy ??"
Mendak: "A patriot captain..."

Riker: "Somedays you get the bear, somedays the bear gets you....."

Keiko: "Come on, don't be nervous..."
Data: "I am not nervous........ I am confused..."
