Plot
Five years ago, just before joining the Enterprise, Geordi was on an away team
investigating a mysteriously abandoned outpost, the outpost was left by the inhabitans
without any trace. Now All of the other members of that team except for Geordi, Susanna and
Hickman have disappeared, Hickman has stolen a shuttle and have been spoted by a transport
vessel in route to the outpost. Sussana joins Geordi onboard the Enterprise to try and
find out what has happend, Enterprise finds the shuttle aproaching the planet but all
atempts at communication is futile, Hickman in the shuttle won't answer the calls and
in panic he increases the speed towards the planet, Picard tries to talk reason and asks
Hickman to pull up and reducing speed, but nothing is done and the shuttle entes the
atmosfere in great speed where it burns up and explodes. A quick sensor sweep reveales
2 other shuttles on the planet and Riker forms an awayteam to investigate, while there
they find leftovers of a couple of uniforms and some strange footprints, but Sussana
is drawn to a certain point on the planet, close to the landingpoints, however she
returns with the rest of the crew to the Enterprise to try and find out what has happend
there.
Data begins to study the results and finds traces of alien cells on the found uniform,
however he's not able to find the origin, after some record-scanning he finds that the
cells and the footprints dosn't belong to any known lifeform on the planet, and with
that in mind he ends up Crusher's office to scan the medical records to try and find
a match somewhere, meanwhile Geordi and Sussana goes over the recordings made 5 years
ago in order to try and find something they've overlooked at the time. Sussana keeps
getting more and more anxious to try and get back on the planet, finaly she runs off
from Geordi, but falls to the floor, when Geordi wants to check her pulse, he discovers
that he skin has begun to change, and that she has entered a metamorphassis, changing
into another creature, she is imidiatly placed in sickbay where Crusher and Ogawa
begins a race against time to find the couse, they try to stop the transforming with
drugs, this appears to work at first, but later on the rate of transformation begins
to increase. Crusher and Ogawa decides to do a compleatly medical examination, more
intense than any other, Crusher quickly realises that the drugs dosn't work, and the
only explination is that a parasite is present in the body.
Geordi also races against time, convinced that he's next he goes over the old recordings
again and again, Data suggests that he should take a break, but Geordi insists on going
on, after checking the audio and subspace areas of the recording, he returns to visual
scans. After a few reviews he suddenly discovers a mysterious shadow on the recording,
he programs the computer to make a holo-deck simulation of the scene and rushes off.
Beverly and Ogawa manages to finaly find the cause of the changes to Sussana, a parasite
is found in her body, and they hurry on to try and remove it, hoping that Sussana is
capable of reversing the process. Geordi has got his simulation on the holo-deck running
and begins to remove the characters one-by-one, until he end up with no persons, and a
shadow on the wall, after some calculations the presence creating the shadow is recreated
apparently it's a creatue that acts like a cameleon, thereby making in invisible in normal
light, but Geordi's time has run out and he begins to trnasform too.
In sickbay the removal of the parasite from Sussana was working, and she quickly begins to
recover, Crusher asks Geordi to come to sickbay, but the computer is unable to locate him
anywhere on the ship, Data tries to seal off the transporters and Worf secures the shuttles
and a massive search begins, however Geordi, now invisible, enters a transporterroom, overrides
the security-lockout and beams off. It quickly ends up that the sensors is useless and it's
not possible to lacate Geordi on the planet, Data begins to work on modifying a flashlight
to use non-visual light while Riker and Worf tries to plan a searchpattern on the planet.
Meanwhile Sussana wakes up and explains about the lifeforms, that they are not realy parasites
but uses that way to breed, they plant a little structure inside another lifeform, this then
causes the changes later on, when she hears that Geordi is missing she insists to go down
with the search team and states that she's the only one that's capable of finding Geordi on
the planet. On the planet the team begins to search folowing the instructions given by Sussana
and they discover Geordi along with two others, apparently the other members from the awayteam
5 years ago, but as the lifeforms is not inteligent only acting on instinct they try to run
away from the humans as they've been discovered.
