Ain't
it Cool News: Film geeks apply here. The guy who runs it, Harry
J. Knowles, tips the scale at 350 lbs. and counting. That's how you
know that, when it comes to geekdom, he's the capa da capo.
Lots of advance movie reviews, scoops, and info on forthcoming projects.
The
Movie Cliches Page: Lists every film cliche in the book, organized
by genre. Hilarious fun for the Blockbuster generation.
Roger
Ebert on Movies: Even if you disagree with him, his essay-like reviews
are never less than fascinating. The Pauline Kael of the glasses-and-suspenders
set.
Comics
www.warrenellis.com:
Meet Warren Ellis, acclaimed writer of Transmetropolitan, Planetary,
and The Authority. He hates you, but that's okay, because
he's British and they can't stand real sunlight. He won't hurt you
if you don't look at him.
Comic
Creator Resources Page: Reams of priceless information for aspiring
writers, artists, inkers, letterers, and colorists. It's come in
handy for me on numerous occasions already.
Lea Hernandez:
Writer and artist of Cathedral Child and Clockwork Angels, and one of the
best women working in comics today.
Dwayne
McDuffie: The brains behind the late, lamented Milestone Comics.
A hell of a writer, as you'll see if you peruse his site. Some neat
comic scripts for those of you who'd like to pursue that as a vocation.
Comic
Book Resources: An online weekly comics mag, featuring the hilarious
hatred of Warren Ellis' column "Come in Alone", as well as the good-naturedly
vicious satire of Gail's "You'll All Be Sorry!"
Sequential
Tart: Another online comics magazine, but this one's monthly and it's
done by women, for women. Women reading comics...I could sure use
me one of those.
Beek's
Books: Todd VerBeek is a longtime comics reviewer with a great handle
on the subject. Recommended reading. His site also features
the handy comic book database program CDATA2K.
Herge
et Tintin: Le Cyber-Catalogue Complet: A huge reference to all the
Tintin sites on the web. If you haven't read Tintin, you need
to.
Politics
The
Mirrorshades Postmodern Archive: The Web home of acclaimed SF author
Bruce Sterling. The unofficial conscience of the science fiction
genre, Sterling is one of this decade's great thinkers, media critics,
and raconteurs. Interested parties should download his excellent
non-fiction book about the history of computer crime, The
Hacker Crackdown. You can download this book for free, and I
highly recommend it.
Slashdot.org:
A techie spin on current events, politics, science, and entertainment;
regular readers of Wired should feel right at home here. Most
useful for getting a feel for the way Silicon Valley types view things.
Bare-Faced
Messiah: Here’s where you can find the complete text of the withering
biography of Church of Scientology and "Dianetics" founder L. Ron Hubbard,
Bare-Faced Messiah. The page also includes links to articles detailing
the Church’s desperate efforts to suppress publication of this important
expose.
Humor
The Onion:
Wicked, wicked political humor at its zenith. How can you resist
headlines like "Jesus Christ Kills 2, Injures 7 in Abortion Clinic Attack",
"Congress Approves $540 Million for Evil", or "AOL Acquires Time-Warner
In Largest-Ever Expenditure Of Pretend Internet Money"?
The True
Religion: Founded by a bunch of yabbos from South Carolina, (including
my onetime correspondent, the late Cronan Thompson) the True Religion and
its political wing, the World Oligarchy, have laid out their detailed plans
for ruling the world. Dozens of members and growing...apply now and
you may still be saved.
Software
Napster:
A wonderful program that lets you find every MP3 you've ever dreamed of
having. How can I find it in me to fault a program that yielded not
one, not two, but three remixes of the Doctor Who theme? A
must.
Get Right:
Ever spent hours chasing your family away from the phone in a desperate
attempt to download that 30MB demo? Herein lies the answer; the program
lets you download stuff incrementally, as well as scheduling dial-in and
hang-up times. I've used it a bunch. Recommended.
Winamp: For
actually playing all those MP3s you get from Napster, you criminal bastard.
CDATA
2000: Shareware program for keeping track of all those mind-warping
comic books, for the obsessive-compulsive among you.
Miscellaneous
The
Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5: If you're watching Babylon 5, it
would behoove you to browse this site religiously; it contains all sorts
of annotations and commentary from J. Michael Straczinski that help the
show make considerably more sense to non-grognards.
A. Friendly's
Books: My beneficient employers. Here you can browse their catalog
and order books directly with a credit card.
