| Movies have been a big part of my life for most
of a decade. As a kid, I enjoyed them the same way kids enjoy everything,
on a surface, visceral level. But when my family started taking the
paper in 1991, I discovered the wonderful world of film criticism.
At the hands of the Kansas City Star's longtime reviewer, Robert
W. Butler, I was exposed to a vast world of cinema. Butler introduced
me to foreign, art, and independent films; but more importantly, he taught
me how to think critically about what I was watching rather than simply
being a passive receiver, and pointed out dozens of wonderful, intelligent
movies I might otherwise have missed.
