Optics - According to the Oxford dictionary, optics is the scientific study of sight and the behavior of light, or of other radiation or particles. When we think of light, what comes to mind is the radiation we see; the study of optics does not pertain only to the visible region but to the entire electromagnetic spectrum. My first encountered with optics was in my high school physics class, learning about simple geometric optics. At that point I didn't feel optics was important or useful. Only when I attended the University of Rochester, known for its Optics program, then I realized the many practical applications of Optics; from medical laser surgery to laser fusion.
