The Great American Mullet
Greetings there, this is a band that I met on napster. There a band that I have grown to love. Hope you enjoy the interview.
Human Error Magazine: Lets start off by giving the readers a little history on "The Great American Mullet", when you started, etc?
TGAM: We started back in November of '00. I had been in a band called Sela with some guys I went to school with. I single handedly destroyed that band. So after that, the guitarist, Joseph Bynum, and me decided to go ahead and keep a band going. We spent about 3 months writing songs together before we decided we were ready to add a drummer to the band. So Micah Smith, formally of the band "You Got It", was added to the mix. We played a few shows locally before we realized that because of differences of opinion, and Micah's love for U2 and all 80's music, it wouldn't work out for us. So on May 31 I made up my mind to find new musicians. That's when I found Adam Cox, and Jamie Something. I'd been praying for Adam to join the band since the start, and God finally moved on him to do so. Jamie played bass, so I switched to guitar. It didn't work. So for now, Adam Willard, from Sela, is our Guitar player, till he goes to college.
Human Error Magazine: Where do you feel that the music of "The Great American Mullet" is headed?
TGAM: Emo. Definitely more emo influenced, but still with a gutter punk edge. I'm all about snotty punk. I want the songs to become more and more blunt and convicting.
Human Error Magazine: How do you feel that the band has grown in the past year, both personally and musically?
TGAM: Well, I know it's teaching me to trust in God completely. It's hard to be in a band, and book shows when you're not even sure if you'll have a drummer. Musically, we've gotten better, and better. Fewer mistakes, more variety.
Human Error Magazine: What kind of gear do you all use?
TGAM: I have a 700-watt peavey fire bass amp, with 2 15's and 4 10's. It's loud. Our drummer uses a drum kit with no name. It's sad. I use Ghl strings. Our guitar player has a peavey studio pro amp, fender strat, and uses Ernie Ball strings.
Human Error Magazine: What kind of bands influences you, both musically and personally and musically?
TGAM: Screeching Weasel, the Queers, Sunny Day Real Estate, Pedro The Lion, Propaghandi, Value Pac, Muchacho Vivo, Britney Spears, Pop Unknown, Meat Loaf, etc.
Human Error Magazine: Is there anything that you would like to leave with the readers of this zine?
TGAM: The Mullet is a particle, it's a wave. I know Kung Foo. Don't fear the Mullet.
