Well I'm very happy you decided to visit and I hope you will enjoy the info here and maybe even benefit from it if you are interested in the Social Work field.

About Social Work

What is Social Work? Well according to the NASW (National Association of Social Workers), " Social Work is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to that goal."Huh??? In plain english, social worker's try to help people and communties that are in need. Whether it's programs to help low income families find decent housing, employment opportunities for out of work welfare recipients, providing rehabilitation services for people with disabilites or working with neighborhood task forces to come up with solutions plaguing different communities such as drugs or gang violence. Whatever the situation may be, Social Workers will do whatever they can provide assistance and aid as long as there are people in need.

Different Fields in Social Work

There are many fields for a social worker to practice in. You'll find them in such areas as aging, alcohol and substance abuse, children and youth, community and neighborhood services, corrections and criminal justice, disabilities, education and training, family services, income maintenance, medical and health care, occupational social work, and schools.

So Why Do I Want To Be A Social Worker?

Well I guess I want to do this because of the type of person I am. I am a very loving person with a knack for listening to other people's problems. The act of being able to actually listen to another person is not as easy as it sounds but it's a quality of mine that I think I'm very good at. Ever since I was little, I was always the person that people came to with their problems. I wasn't always able to solve them but at least I could lend a caring ear as a well as a shoulder to cry on. Sometimes, that's all you need! :-)
I'm also the type of person that doesn't judge other people. That quality is very much needed when working with people of all races, backgrounds and situations very different from yours. I am also a very empathetic person which can help to really get in touch with what the client is going through. However, even though emapthy is a good trait to have, it is very important not to step over that line where empathy can turn into much more. Click here for The NASW Code of Ethics
Right now I am a bit undecided as to what I want to specialize in. I'm very interested in working with abused women because unfortunatley, domestic abuse is on the rise in the US and advocacy for abused women is greatly needed. Eventually, I would like to become a counselor and open up my own private practice specializing in family and/or individual counseling as well as women's issues.

Well that's it for right now. Thanks for stopping in and please come back soon to see the latest updates! If you are interested in pursuing a career in Social Work and would like to learn more about it, then email me and I'll see what I can do to bring you up to speed!
