The Field High School "ROYAL GARDSMEN" Marching Band has a long and rich history of outstanding accomplishment. The "Gardsmen" are well known in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania as being a "highly polished" marching unit. The band is supported by the Field Local Schools and the Field Band Boosters, Inc.

The Royal Gardsmen began to take shape in 1964 under the direction of the late Frank Masters. It was the vision of Mr. Masters that led to the Royal Gardsmen of today. Having been in England and being impressed with the Buckingham Palace Guards, Mr. Masters wrote to the Queen of England asking permission to copy the uniform of the palace guards. He received his response shortly thereafter from the British Embassy, giving him permission to copy the uniform of the Coldstream Guards and use the name "Royal Gardsmen". (Mr. Masters chose to use the British spelling of Gardsmen without the "u", in keeping with the band's British theme.) Within a year the old band uniforms were replaced with an authentic reproduction of the famous Coldstream Guard uniforms of Great Britain and the "Royal Gardsmen" were born.

That year the band entered their first competition and they have been competing ever since. The Royal Gardsmen also have participated in many non-competitive events during their history including appearances in parades, sporting events and even a performance in Canada for the Queen of England and the Duke of Windsor.

The Gardsmen have undergone several different uniform changes since their inception, however they have always had a "British" look about them. The current uniform of the Gardsmen consists of a red jacket with a black and white cape, white gauntlets, and both black and white pants (white for competitions and black for all other performances). The helmet is white with a white ostrich plume that is only used for competitions. The color guard uniform is a black and white jacket over a black jumpsuit. The Gardsmen uniform creates quite a striking appearance on the field.

The many props, flags, and carts used by the band are designed and constructed by the directors and the many talented band parents who help put the Royal Gardsmen on the field.

The band currently competes in Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) competitions, but have competed in the past in Pennsylvania Federation of Contest Judges competitions where they were the 1983, 1984, and 1985 Class AA Champions (the first class AA band to win the Championship three consecutive years.) The band has also competed in Marching Bands of America competitions - a national competition circuit.
