What's this all about, then?

What? Another lyrics site? Yes indeed, but with a difference...

There are so many sites on the Web devoted to lyrics for your favorite artists or for chart hits, new or old, or devoted to a particularly kind of music... But even though there are so many lyrics out there, that is, of course, only the smallest tip of the top of the iceberg...

Here we will feature some songs, that didn't make it onto those sites. Songs that are almost or completely forgotten. Songs that - for whatever reason - aren't played on the radio anymore, have faded from view, or weren't in view in the first place, but still have interesting lyrics and/or background stories to them. Bizarre, humorous, novelty songs... Obscure or forgotten, funny or plain weird, you will be able to discover them here!

And since we're not expecting you to actually know these songs, you will find not only the words but also the music itself (or sizeable excerpts) in RealAudio format, plus a picture of the record sleeve or artist if possible.

Note: You will need the RealAudio player (RealPlayer) to enjoy the music. This can be downloaded for free from the RealNetworks site. Go get it now if you don't already have it (but come back later...)

Songs will be presented in weekly instalments, with one or two new songs each week (approximately). Previous episodes will remain available as long as there is room in this dwelling.

Lyrics are our own transcriptions, except if noted otherwise, so don't rely too much on them (See the disclaimer)...

This Week we feature a great bloke: King Kong!

King Kong never received an Oscar, which really is a crying shame and disgrace. What other actor has had such an impact, not only on the history of the movies, but on the whole of our Western culture? Then why wasn't he given his due reward? Because he's not human? That's pure species discrimination, of course. Besides, his acceptance speech would really be something to listen out for...

King Kong - Jimmy Castor Bunch

King Kong not only was a great bloke - literally -, he was quite a funky bloke too, judging by this number. It's probably the best known song by Jimmy Castor, saxophone player/ bunch leader (although he doesn't blow his sax on this record). We suppose Jimmy Castor also sings the lead vocals. Or does he sing King Kong's part?

Our source is a 7 inch single (Atlantic 10675, a Belgian issue from 1975). By the way, Part 2 is instrumental. In the following transcription King Kong's "love call" is not included, we leave it up to you to fill that in.

King Kong, Part 1
(J. Castor - J. Pruitt)

Kamasami.... KONG!!!

He lived in the jungle where he was born the king
His great strength made him lord of everything
No creature crossed his path and lived for long
His name, so legend tells us, was King Kong
His height was never measured, but was great
The jungle shook beneath his mighty weight
His arms were muscled, steady as a tree
His chest was thick and wide as it could be

Kamasami! (King Kong)
Kamasami Kong! (King Kong)
Kamasami! (King Kong)
Kamasami Kong! (King Kong) Kamasami!
He didn't dance or party
He spoke at times but hardly
One woman heard his love call
But he was too big and too tall

One day while Kong was sleeping on his back
A tyrannosaurus launched a sneak attack!
They fought, first Kong went down, then up again
The fight went on, no one knew who would win!
Kong reached and seized the monster with both hands
Then summoned all the strength at his command
He smashed the creature's mouth till it was split
Then like a child, began to play with it!
He beat his hairy chest and looked around
Five miles away they heard his roaring sound

Kamasami! (King Kong)
Kamasami Kong! (King Kong)
Kamasami! (King Kong)
Kamasami Kong! (King Kong) Kamasami!
He didn't dance or party
He spoke at times but hardly
One woman heard his love call
But he was too big and too tall

From every one he knew, he got respect
Whoever failed to give it, he'd correct!
No creature crossed his path and lived for long
His name, so legend tells us, was King Kong!

Kamasami! (King Kong)

King Kong (Is Alive And Well) - Ronnie Lee Williams

(King Kong sleeve pic)
We picked up this record in a second hand shop just the other day. The writer/performer, Ronnie Lee Williams, is an unknown quantity to us - even a search on AltaVista didn't come up with anything useful. It's a straightforward disco stomper, and the record was a German issue (Ariola 17 461 AT). No year is given on the label, but from the lyrics below we infer that it's not later than 1978 (or 79). Just possibly this song was released to cash in on the second King Kong movie (the one in which Jessica Lange 'heard his love call') from 1976...

King Kong (Is Alive And Well)
(R. L. Williams / G. Farmer / R. L. Williams)
- Ronnie Lee Williams

King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well

I met King Kong just the other day
He talked about his hassles tryin' to live in L.A.
He didn't like the freeways, couldn't stand the smell
Says he had to split 'cause L.A. for him was hell

King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well

Hollywood producers, they won't get off his back
Say he is the greatest, they wanna make a stack
King Kong he can't take it, it really brings him down
If they don't leave him alone he'll stomp this town down!

King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
- yes he is y'all
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
- hear him stomp now
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
- do it! do it! do it!
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
- get down monkey!
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well

People let me tell ya, how this ape is built
Listen, he's tall as tall, as big as big
and strong as a mother... I'm sorry 'bout that
He moves with the wind, don't he?
And stomps with thunder
And when his muscles start to move
The earth begins to quake!

King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
- yes he is
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well

No one pays attention, nobody seems to listen
For good King Kong he don't lie (no lies!)
Rumors from the desert say he's made up his mind
He'll be stomping on the coast on a day in '79!

King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
King Kong is alive and well in California
King Kong is alive and well
etc.

Other King Kong songs

Just to satisfy your curiosity, here are some other King Kong songs that we know of. Abba sang a rather noisy King Kong Song on their LP "Waterloo"... In December 1961 a song also called King Kong by Terry Lightfoot & his Jazzmen made a brief appearance in the lower regions of the British singles chart... a search on ASCAP's ACE database and BMI's Repertoire database revealed (apart from the obvious film music references) at least 23 songs with the title "King Kong"... and apart from them, there were among others the following songs: King Kong (Your Song) by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett (of "Monster Mash" fame) ... King Kong Five by Mano Negra... King Kong As Motorhead Explain by Frank Zappa... King Kong Blues written by Lyons Patrick Campbell... King Kong Elvis (it had to happen, we suppose) written by Thomas Giles Robinson...

(Note: the ACE database only lets you search for song titles beginning with certain words, but it can give the performers where known. The Repertoire database lets you search for titles containing certain words, but it only gives the song writers...)
