Sound
One day I saw a page talking about saxophone timbre. It said that the saxophone
timbre depended principaly on the hardware, i.e. instrument, mouthpiece, reed etc. I
think the software i.e. the player is the most important .
Just think about this for a moment; have you ever heard any other instrument
give so many diffrent sounds ? Sure when you see M. Breker in concert the first
thing you look at is the instrument then the mouthpiece. Ask him what he's got and
he will be pleased to tell you . Ask him why and he for sure will answer"comfort"
and he will be right . Hardware is always chosen for it's comfort . When you try a
new horn what do you look for ?
I have been playing sax for 30 years and I can tell you that I never had any
problems with timbre.
By the way I can play different timbres on my horn . Why ? I use my Imagination
and my Ears . Remember this , the sound that comes out of your horn comes from
your ears . You cannot reproduce a sound you don't hear . If you think you can play
one kind of sound , THAT'S IT . You will never be able to play anything else as
long as you think like a narrow minded saxophone player .
By the way I play tenor reeds on alto saxophone . Why ? Comfort. When you
are comfortable , you can more easily control what you do . Now if you want to
know more go to the Tone page .
