Pirate Pete

Welcome to Pirate Pete's Mod Reviews Page! You'll find here a collection of my reviews of mods which were either emailed to me or I have picked up in my travels on the Web.

If you are interested in how I began reviewing mods and the methodology I use to review them, see "Notes about the reviews".

Reviews are grouped in pages of 20 reviews per page. Use this index page to select a review to read (reviews are sorted chronologically); clicking on the song title will take you to the review. Alternatively, you can use the navigational links ("next", "previous", "first", "last") to view the reviews a whole page at a time.

If you want to listen to the song for yourself, either jump to the review page by clicking the song title and then click on the song URL, or click on the "[Download Song]" link. With the former method, some songs which I have on my local drive do not have links -- I will email you one or more of these songs if you request it...but only ONE song per day!]. Selecting the "[Download Song]" link will either let you download the file directly if a URL is available, or will fire up your email client with the subject line "Please email me song {title}".

Worth a 3rd or 4th listen?Yes, but space the sessions out!
Review:At first listen, I thought the song title referred to the movie "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas. But after I called the song up with Impulse Tracker and read the artist's notes, I realized this was not the case.

According to the artist, this song was written for someone who may or may not have had a chance to listen to it. From the dark tone of the author's comments and the song lyrics, it seems apparent--though I may be way off base here--that the song is about a relationship which somehow either turned sour or broke off. Perhaps Kain just recently broke up with his girlfriend. There are many possibilities. But one thing is perfectly clear--the pain the artist feels.

Now pain and misery are valid reasons for writing a song--thousands of songs over the years have used pain as their *raison d'etre*--but such songs tend to be depressing, and unless you happen to be in a like mood, your first impulse will probably be to discard this song: after all, who in their right mind would actively *seek out* pain and misery? But still, "Falling Down" presents us with a melody which, even though dark and angst-ridden, still possesses enough emotional "Oomph" to interest us and keep us listening.

I gave it a low technical rating because of the poor quality of the samples (and yes, I remember how I used to complain about reviewers who trashed my songs simply because of my sample quality [or lack thereof]).

Worth a 3rd or 4th listen?Is the sky blue?!
Review:Here we go again! Another superb composition that rocks my socks off. Why, oh why didn't I wait before releasing my last Top 10 list (see http://ppse.org/top10) ? If I had, there is no doubt in my mind this mod would've made it to the top slot. This mod is exactly the reason I began tracking in the first place--to try to imitate something which, by all measures I'm humanly capable of establishing, moves my body and soul so much it actually hurts.

I'm not sure what it is that I like best about this mod. Perhaps it's the tune itself, I don't know. But *something* clicks, that's for sure...after listening to this magnificent composition, I'm ready to take on the world. Heart surgery? Pfaugh! Nothing to it! Bring that baby on!

Scorpik uses an extended opening sequence to set the mood--dark and brooding, as indicated by the rather cryptic title ("Invasion of the Body Snatchers", anyone?). Eerie vocals, sound effects, and deeply resonant synth sample put you in the "I'm in the Twilight Zone" kind of mood. Then the artist drops you into a 4-on-the-floor differential breakbeat that takes your breath away with its manic rhythm--if you're dancing to this, be sure to bring plenty of nitroglycerin pills along; you'll need them to sustain your heart (I hope I don't. have angina just writing this!).

Midway through the song comes a break, followed by another lapse into the initial rhythm. After about two minutes of this, Scorpik pulls out the stops and lets this beauty fly! In a rave sequence that raises the back of my neck hairs just *thinking* about it, Scorpik gets totally vicious with anyone foolish enough to still be on the dance floor (break out the oxygen masks!). Yer ol' Pirate pal is even now weeping tears of jealous anguish wishing I'd been capable of producing such a *monstrously* beautiful sequence!

Now, don't get me wrong--there are other mods that are excellent and quite capable of bringing tears of joy to my eyes. Some from different genres might even rate above this mod. Yet in this present moment, I absorb "Back to the Cocoons" with all the relish and attention I can muster. It simply *is* the best. I can't put it any other way, except, perhaps, "Daddy, when I grow up, I wanna be like Mr. Scorpik...."

Long live Poland (Scorpik's point of origin)!!!

Review:Of all the vacation spots I could choose in the world, I've never had a hankering to visit Iraq before...until now, that is.

After listening to this exquisite mod (obtained from the Advanced section of Walnut Creek's Music Compo 6), I'd like to visit this Middle Eastern land of milk and honey (according to the pre-Saddam brochures anyway--I doubt if the old strongman would want a Yankee American pig-dog like myself to start people thinking modern day Persia was a new vacation hot-spot).

"Boogie" works for me on a number of fronts. First, the beat is simply scrumptious--I picture myself cranking this baby up to 3/4 volume in my Jensen stereo while cruising at 90 mph along I-70 on a pleasure trip to Pittsburgh, PA (and when the cop pulls me over, I imagine he'll be dancing on the berm as he writes my speeding ticket). Second, I love the arabesque chord progressions (yes, for all you Music majors out there, there's a specific name for the progression, I just don't happen to know it--does anyone?). Third, the jazzy melody soothes my Occidental ears, easing me into an Oriental groove without the slightest hint of the culture shock I've come to associate with such music (of course, it could easily be said that this isn't *really* Oriental music, it's just an *American's interpretation* of such). I particularly enjoyed the muzzein sample (calling the faithful to prayer?)

I don't know who won Music Compo 6, nor do I know who composed this piece, but I hope "Bahgdad Boogie" placed fairly high. From the other entries I've heard, *I personally* would've given this mod *at least* 4th place, possibly as high as 3rd.

Worth a 3rd or 4th listen?Ummm...not really
Review:This mod is very irritating. One measly little sample ruined it for me, a recording of a male voice saying "You pinhead!"

The sample is played 30 times throughout the song (with minor variations such as echoing, gapping, and channel swapping). I must deduce from the emphasis placed on this pejorative term that either a) the composer has a low opinion of him/herself, b) he or she is a bigot that enjoys demeaning other people, or c) the sample comes from a movie or TV show the composer particularly enjoyed. Using Occam's Razor, I suppose (c) would be the most appropriate option, although if the composer were as young as I suspect, his or her emotional immaturity might lead me to lean more towards options (a) or (b).

The remainder of the song is okay, if you enjoy repetition. I personally found the repeated phrases tedious for a techno piece. If some thematic variation were added, and if this mod were spruced up with a more powerful bass/drum line, and if the number of times the "pinhead" sample was played was minimized, and if...heck, I'm not inclined to rewrite this piece, but my point is simply that it *could* be improved, at least according to my way of seeing things. But hey, you might enjoy this just as it is, particularly if you're into old C-64/Amiga style mods.

Review:You like mellow music? Check out this great tune by Leviathan. I'd call it a "classic", but that might mislead you into thinking this mod was old (it was made in 1995).

I call this style "Ambient/contemplative" because this tune is "mood music" of the finest sort. It's suitable for any activity from romancing your loved one to kicking back on your private beach (ha ha), sipping on Mai Tai's and watching the sun sink slowly beneath the western horizon, spreading a soft, golden glow across the ocean as a gentle sea breeze ruffles your $200 hairdo...boy, howdy. Am I into this mod, or what? *8^)

As usual, Leviathan is masterful in the handling of his instruments and arrangement of his tracks. I personally enjoyed his "Wanderlust" mod better than this one, but then again, I like "Dust to Dust" better than his "Emerald Visions". Whichever mod you choose, if you like soft music which caresses your eardrums, I highly recommend Leviathan's works.

Review:Feeling blue (perhaps over a lost love)? This happy little tune will perk you right up.

A bright and airy opening arpeggio is repeated throughout the song to good effect, with plenty of dance bass/drum riffs added for spice. The tune is very catchy and easily recognizable (you'll be whistling the melody after only one listen).

Although I wouldn't call this a club tune, it is definitely meant to be danced to. Even so, you don't have to be a John Revolting to look good on the dance floor with this song. At 135 BPM, the beat is easy to move to.

Review:This pleasant little mod really satisfies my craving for ambient music--it puts me into an undefinable mood--undefinable, yet nonetheless pleasant. I only know the artist from his entry on Trax in Space, but from what I see I admire his humility, and as a mod artist myself, I can sympathize only too well with the insecurities expressed in his mod comments. Relax, Vincent--if the rest of your mods are like this one, I'd say you are well on your way to attaining your musical goals.

The opening synth arpeggios set the mood for the rest of the piece. They produce a certain *je ne c'est quoi* feeling which I suppose might best be described as "warm and fuzzy". When listening to this mod, I picture myself curled up in front of a large fireplace stuffed and blazing away with crackling logs. Outside, the wind howls and snow beats against the door, begging to be let in. I'm holding a cup of steaming hot cocoa (topped with marshmallows, *von naturlich*). My eyes begin to tear as I listen to thr music, for it makes me nostalgic as I remember poignant scenes from my childhood.

Review:This is a most intresting mod.

The artist makes good use of synthesizers to create a strange mood entirely appropriate for either fantasy (a la "Dragonslayer") or science fiction ("Barbarella" comes to mind for some reason). It has a cool sound to it, although the repeated "wah-wah-wah-wah" of the synth background does tend to become tediuous (kind of reminds me of the robot from "Lost In Space", flailing its arms about and shouting "Warning! Warning! Warning!"). and the melody is very constrained. Nonetheless, I found the mod to be worthwhile if only for the sci-fi/fantasy mood it elicits. (Anybody know what the heck the title means? Is it a phrase in Swedish? Or an acronym for something? The artist doesn't say in the mod comments)
