Probably just old pots to you. These came from the ocean off Marzamemi, on the Southeastern coast of Sicily. My service in the US Navy at Sigonella Naval Air Facility afforded me a chance to get involved with Peter Throckmorton, Gerhard Kapitan, and other pioneers in the field of marine archaeology. We had to find these sherds the hard way -- by poking around the sandy bottom with our knives. Today, they have technology such as side scan sonar that can produce sonogram images of the bottom that are almost as good as optical photos. For some really interesting side scan sonar images, check out Stur Hultquist's web site.

My Herreshoff Sloop

I dearly loved this boat. Kept her in the Vermilion Lagoons, on the South shore of Lake Erie. She was 26 feet overall, and had a full fixed keel, drawing over 7 feet. (So no gunk holing for me!)
