Sarah Vaughan"The divine one", Sarah Vaughan, began her career as the second pianist in Earl "Fatha" Hines' band - after winning a contest at the Apollo theatre (singing "Body and Soul"), when she was just a teenager. Sarah had an incredible voice, and was also a very fine musician, something which is evident in her style. We love Sarah. Can we even recommend one recording over another? They're all amazing, but we'll try. Some favorites: Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown (fantastic!) Send In The Clowns, Duke Ellington Songbook 1, How long has this been going on, for starters. We also like I Love Brazil, which features all Brazilian music and musicians. Read more about Sarah at PBS' American Masters Click on the thumbnails below, to view some photos of Sarah. |

Denis CharlesThis drummer and percussionist, originally from St.Croix in the Virgin Islands, was especially well known in the avant-garde scene - although he worked and recorded extensively (not just as an avant-garde musician.) He was a beautiful and free spirit and his death in 1998 was a great loss. His website The Denis Charles Page was created in his memory and is a lovely tribute. Check out Denis on Sonny Rollins' What's New . |

Antonio Carlos JobimJobim wrote many of the beautiful Brazilian tunes, in the Bossa Nova genre, that are now considered standards, such as "Corcovado", "The Girl from Ipanema", "Wave", "Desafinado", just to name some of the more famous ones. He also performed his own music. Elis and Tom, a collaboration with the Brazilian singer, Elis Regina, is one recording that we really like. Clube do Tom is a great website all about this very important composer and musician. It includes his discography, song lyrics, photos, and more, and is available in both English and Portugese. |
