Sharon collapsed on her bed as soon as she saw it, being too drunk to sit up. The room was spinning and she had to relax a bit.
"Sit down." she said to nick, motioning to the bed. He sat down next to her. He couldn't stop staring at her lying there with her eyes closed. The lights were out and the moonlight was shining on her, making her dark hair look almost blue. After a few minutes of watching, he couldn't contain himself any longer. He cautiously reached out and caressed her arm. Her eyes snapped open.
"Uh, sorry." Nick said, snatching his hand away.
"No, it's ok, keep going if you want. Nick?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you want to kiss me?"
"Do you want me to?" Nick asked.
"Nick...why don't you tell me how you really feel about me." Sharon said. Nick paused for a while, not wanting to embarrass himself if she didn't feel the same way.
"Well, I...really like you. A lot. We've only known each other for two days but you're like no other girl I've met before. Maybe if we keep hanging out and getting to know each other better...we could, you know, go steady...." Nick paused waiting for a reply. Sharon thought to herself for a bit. Who in this day and age still used the word "steady"? What a dork this kid was, truly.
"Well, Nick, I have to be honest with you. You seem to have problems with your self-esteem. You don't know how to talk to people. Or dance. You don't have the best personal hygiene in the world...."
"All right, all right, enough! I know all of these things already...and I swear I can change! I just want to be with you. Please."
"Nick you didn't let me finish. You are pretty much a nerd, but I for some reason like you. Most people hate me. I didn't invite any friends with us tonight because I have none. I keep to myself most of the time and drink. But you really like me, so I think I want to be with you too. But let's take things slowly, it has only been two days. Let's give it a couple of weeks at least before we start talking about going, um, steady. What do you think?"
"I think I'm the happiest guy in the world...I mean yeah that sounds great!"
"But Nick, there's something you have to understand first. I drink. A lot. I always have and probably always will, and there's nothing you can do to change that, understand?" Nick was silent for a moment. What if he fell in love with this girl? He couldn't sit back and watch her destroy her life, not to mention her liver. But he was too happy that she was accepting him into her life that he was afraid to mention anything about it. All he could do was hope her drinking would cease after a while. She couldn't be an alcoholic at 16, could she?
"Don't worry about it." Nick said, and the conversation ended.
**************3 Weeks Later
Nick and Sharon saw each other a lot after that night. They would go to the beach, go to clubs or bars, or just hang out at each other's houses. Mostly every time Sharon was drinking, and sometimes Nick would drink too. It wasn't really a problem for him, he decided. She looked cute when she was drunk. At this point Nick was getting angsty waiting for her reply. He decided to bring it up to her one night at the beach.
"Hey Nick, do you want any of this Bacardi?" Sharon asked.
"No thanks, actually I wanted to talk to you about something."
"I guess I'll finish the bottle off then. What is it?"
"Well, um, remember when we talked about what could happen if we spent more time getting to know each other for a couple weeks? Well, its been 2 weeks, so...you know...would you ever think of going out with me?"
"What're we doin now?" Sharon slurred.
"Well, I meant that maybe if you don't mind, you could be my girlfriend." Sharon laughed for a minute.
"You sure have a way with words. Ok, I'll be your girlfriend. Now let's get the hell out of here, I have to pee."
"Um, ok." Nick couldn't be happier. He helped Sharon to her feet and they walked to her house. Nick still knew he had to tell Sharon eventually that he was a part of the Backstreet Boys. How would she react to that? She would think he was a fool for sure. When they had settled down in Sharon's room, she asked, "So, I start school in about a week. When does your tutoring start?"
"I actually wanted to talk to you about that. I won't be home for the tutoring."
"So you do go to school?"
"No. Remember that group I told you about?"
"Yeah...the group..."
"Yeah, well, its sort of a music group. We sing and dance to catchy pop tunes. We call ourselves The Backstreet Boys...we're really big in Germany! " Sharon stared at him for a second before busting up into uncontrollable laughter.
"What? Are you...are you insane? What the hell are you talking about? A singing group...I mean come on." Sharon said.
"No, really. Maybe you've heard our new single, 'Backstreet's Back', on the radio. I have all of our CDs at home that I could show you."
Sharon was in disbelief. They walked over to Nick's house and he showed her the CDs. She could not believe it.
"Wow, so these were the guys at the club that night. I can't believe this. Do you think you're going to make it big? I mean this seems pretty foolish to me if you don't mind me saying." He minded of course, but who cared.
"Yeah, I'm sure we'll make it big here. We already have a show opening for the New Kids on The Block reunion." Nick waited for Sharon to stop laughing again.
"That's why I won't be here when you start school." She stopped laughing.
"But, how long will you be gone?" she asked.
"I don't know, babe. I'm sorry...it won't be more than two weeks. We have some other promo stuff to do, I think MTV is picking up on us a bit."
"This is some pretty heavy stuff. What if you guys get real famous? Where will I fit into your life then?"
"Don't worry, I'll take you with me wherever I go as soon as you graduate from high school." Nick said. He didn't give any thought to her going to college, he just assumed that she would put it off to be with him. Sharon didn't like the sound of it, but she said nothing. She was starting to like him almost as much as he liked her and she didn't want them to separate at all. She had a whole year to think about the college stuff anyway, so she put it in the back of her mind.
